If you are a professional engine builder who does this day in and day out, you may have developed a feel for twisting pushrods and knowing when all the lash is removed. If you are the run of the mill hot rodder who builds one or two motors a year at the most, you will get the valves too tight using the twist method.

Loosen the adjusting nut. Hold the tip of the rocker down against the tip of the valve and jiggle the pushrod up and down while slowly tightening the adjusting nut until all play is removed, then tighten the nut 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. Yeah, it takes three hands.
