Who do we have to talk to to get an upholstery/interior section on this forum? I own and operate an upholstery shop and this section would be of help to the do-it-yourselfers out there.
I second it as I have been in the buisness about 23 years
I have been doing it for 15 years. I do more custom work than anything.
Convertible tops and repairs are what I do the most with some custom work and a few vinyl tops,we do alot of city vehicles too.
I know I would appreciate hearing from you two as I have a couple of projects that will need interiors.
Hmmmm, I've got a headliner that I need some help on...
I like the idea of some interior tutorials on specific subjects, like how to do a headliner in a glass car with wood top bows and door surrounds; or tips on door panel construction. In the current arrangement I will be posting up questions in Hot Rod Talk or Shop Talk, but an "Interiors Talk" section would be OK, too. For me it is just great that you guys are here and willing to share your knowledge.:D
I wish that I had taken pictures of the headliner as it was being installed in the 57 Chevy so I could share them step by step. I will do that on the next one coming in.
As for door panels. There are several ways to make them. You could do they original look or you could do a custom door panel, like the ones in the 57 Chevy. I enjoy doing the custom panels. With this kind of panel you can use your imagination and make something that is one of a kind.
Custom panels are very creative. You can combine the hard look with the loose pleated look to give your panels more detail.
Stock (OEM) panels are only good if you are going for the complete original look. Custom seats generally don't look as good with OEM panels. It's one way or the other.
I am starting a 1979 Ford truck seat in a few days and I will give a step-by-step how to on this project. I hope it will give you an idea of what it takes to reupholster a seat. I will also let you know what tools are needed to complete the job. See ya soon.
I tried to put a how-to for door panels on here, but they only let us use 10 pictures per post, so I will work on that on Friday. Sorry
Who is the moderator for this forum and how do I get in touch with him?
Mr. Mustang Click on his screen name (find it on member list or any thread he's posted to, such as a stickie at the top of several forum topics lists) and choose "private message"
Thanks for the advice. I will ad it later, It was a long day of sewing upholstery today.
I would still like to see an upholstery section so that we can have a place to talk about issue that people might have if they want to do-it-themselves. I belong to several forums and there's a lot of real good info passed around in their upholstery sections.
OK. No answer. I thought this sight was all about sharing information with each other. I found another forum and I will share my knowledge with them, and they already had a section for Upholstery and interiors. That tells me they enjoy sharing info.
See ya !!!!!!
Your last post did not really ask any question - just stated your opinion. Out of curiosity did you PM or e-mail Brent (MrMustang) about your thoughts on the upholstery section? Might be an approach...
rspears, If this Mr. Mustang really wanted to have a great forum he would have seen the post and responded to it. I should not have to PM anyone to get a response. To be truthful, how do you have a genuine car forum without having an interior/upholstery section. The interior is an expression of the car owner. I'm am sure that the guys who spend thousands of $'s on their cars and trucks don't say "Give me something ordinary".
I have decided to post my info on another site. I am sorry, but if I wanted to have a super charger section, it would have been done that day.
Lets see what you got. I too need info on door panel fab, technique on doing a good French seam and what is the best way to deal with the hump when doing carpet. Get this thread so big it becomes its own section. Besides I don't want to put a supercharger on my tired ol' 396. ;)
Hey Merc, we do have a "genuine car forum" here, we welcome anyone with an interest in cars, trucks, hot rods, customs, rat rods, drags, circle track, anything, we don't discriminate like a few other places. We already have a section for you, it's called Shop Talk. Here's the description, "Here's where you can talk shop all day long if you like. If you've got tech questions, engine, suspension, painting, etc, stop by and share!" Why is it important for you to have your own 'section' and why do you feel like you have to take your toys and play somewhere else if you're not given this section? You said in earlier posts that you were willing to share your knowledge and help others but now it seems there are stipulations attached, that's a shame. Many of us were eager to learn.
BTW, we don't need a separate super charger section either, that would be in the 'Engine Talk' section.
Mike
Mr 1954Merc,
Like Mike52 and Geronimo I have lots of questions, like the best way to do the headliner in a chopped coupe to maximize headroom, and how to utilize the header panel up front; door panels in said coupe so they don't look "home made"; the curved area from the doors around the back, behind the buckets so it is presentable but not overly technical; carpeting; and on; and on. And on the subject of the forum, IMHO it is indeed a "great forum" in all respects. I'm perfectly OK with a new section dedicated to interior work, but I agree with Mike that we already have a place for it in the Shop Talk arena. Also, like Geronimo said, if you make this thread the all knowing place to go for interior answers then you might find it moved to a new section.
I've seen sections created on CHR based on the interest and the response they generate----if the interest is there, probably be a section...But I guess I just don't see how a separate section would accomplish more then individual threads.
I've seen a few forums with a separate section for everything, then people get to argue about what section is "appropriate" rather then what the actual thread is trying to accomplish....
BTW, I've used the same upholstery guy for better then 20 years....I just take my car to him and tell him I want to spend XXXX dollars, make it look nice.... last, this is a great forum, with or without an interior section......
I too would be interested in making up door cards, I havn't been here for too long but i have been busy trying to get through every post i can since joining, i have just sat here all night again lol it's 351am here in australia, can you guys post something a little more boaring so i don't stay up so late :)
barnsey
I for one can see why to have a upholstery/interior section, I am going to be doing the interior in our Tudor!
I and many don't have the money to "Just bring it to my upholstery guy and pay him XXXX dollars to have it done". I kinda thought thats what a Hot Rod forum was for to help each other out??? Hmmm, I must be wrong on that!!!
I see we have a "Transmission section" Why is that not under Shop Talk???. I see we have a "Engine Talk" Why is that not under shop talk, and why is there a Deuces Den, why is it separated from Hot rod talk, isn't it a Hot Rod????
So I have to search thru all the Shop talk to find how to do something on my interior, I would look else where, I find that most the time ya search for something, you have to look thru 156,273,128 things to find what you want....If your lucky, you'll find it!
Why not only have to look in upholstery/interior section??? It doesn't sound like a dumb thing to me!
I Don't understand WHY anyone would talk against having a upholstery/interior section, or any other section added, that would help anyone find info!!!
Pat
I would vote for an upholstery/interior section. I plan on trying to do some of the work on my '56 Chevy and really would be interested in seeing some how too's on roadster interiors to give me some ideas of how i want to redo my T-Bucket interior.
I just did a search for door panels and this thread was the first one that was mentioned. The next thread that came up had to do with exhaust for a project that was started in 2007. I started reading some of the posts and there was not any mention of door panels and there were 40 pages to this thread. So I am guessing that somewhere in those 40 pages, door panels was brought up but I will not go through 40 pages. If there was an interior section, those who are looking for the info would go there and look at the thread titles to see if the subject was already talked about and if not, then they could post a question about their situation. I guess I do not see why this is such a big deal because a interior section would add to the site and don't think it takes a lot to add it in, but I could be wrong.
maybe the moderators are just busy getting things organised for christmas and havn't had a chance to read this thred as yet, if this thred is still going in the new year, i am sure that they would consider a dedicated trim section, as from a lot of comments here it seem that not everyone can afford to take there projects to a trimmer, and many have skills that they could try if they knew where to start, I for one would like to have a go at my own trim, so any tips i can pick up from this forum would mean a world of wealth to me.
cheers barnsey
Sounds like a great idea, I've forwarded your request on to the forum owner Brent. I'm sure it will get set up soon.
As for your other comment(s) further down the thread food chain, keep in mind I moderate here for free, cannot always take the time to read each and every thread (unless someone sends me a PM pointing me to something out of the ordinary) here and on the other 6 sites I also moderate for free. Also, keep in mind, I have a family, several businesses, and a life off the web and cannot be in all places at the same time, so if I missed your request above the first time around (a simple PM would have gotten me to look at this thread long before you got yourself in a huff) I humbly apologize.
Regardless, here is wishing you and yours a very happy and a healthy New Year.
Sincerely,
Bill S.
mrmustang, that is one busy life you got going,I have enough trouble between two sites, and the occasional lurk on a few others,as well as doing what I am supposed to be doing... which is spending the last few hours in the shop, tidying up a few things before Christmas day[tomorrow].Enjoy the next few days,I know I will...
mrmustang
That was very nice of you, I'm looking forward to the added section on interior.
Things are not always as they appear. I hope 1954 merc will see your post.
I'll wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Thanks
Richard
I wouldn't mind seeing that myself,Go to my contact section and click on my home page.I might be of some help time to time
Mod note: Moved to new Upholstery/Interior section.
Enjoy the ride folks.
Bill S.
Is this a great site or what!
Nice job!
This is a great section to all who can tech a how to if its seats to hard headliners to replacing a stock type . The have a great one at hot rodders done by Dan two lakes in Wisconsin and he has the trade secrets up . He doesn't leave you to any guessing at all. On the Hamb I believe he goes by Stitch .
Some great tech could come here now not to answer a question but a pic tech on what you do to put in a custom or stock interior .
And to think, a couple of people didn't think we had a need for this section! :HMMM:
Pat
I can't believe 1954Merc??? No patience at all. Didn't get what he wanted right away so he left. If that's how he runs his business I don't think I'd use him.
Let's not start a hate fest here. Clearly he did not understand how things worked and all he had to do was send me a PM and I would attempt to get it done. Someone else PM'd me with this thread, I got a hold of Brent (not always an easy task as he too has a full time job and a family) who made it happen as we can now see.
1954Merc has logged in since the new forum was opened, so he knows it is now active. His choice whether to now participate as an active member or not.
Let's not turn this thread any further in a negative direction.
Here is wishing all of you a healthy and a happy new year.
Bill S.
Agreed. I, for one, would love to see him back and contributing to this thread. Just because he is using another site to post his how-tos doesn't mean he can't also post the same info here. Many of our members post on several sites at the same time. This is a topic I know little about and would love to learn more, whether from him or any other knowledgeable upholsterer.
I felt the same way as you........his post sounded very ungrateful and demanding. What we have to remember is that we don't pay one red cent for the privilege of being able to use this site. Brent spends his money to maintain it and Bill freely gives an enormous amount of time to moderate it. Lighten up and be grateful for what we have here. I also didn't care for the part about "I shouldn't have to PM the mod he should see this and respond." Bill is NOT your servant, you were the one wanting it, how about getting off of your lazy butt and taking the time to PM him?
Geeesh!!!
Don
You are right Bill, I did check in to see about the progress. I might post something on here, but I'm not sure if the guys who bashed me for having this idea really want me too. I know a lot of guys in this business and they act as if it is a big secret and that we should not share our knowledge or we might loose work. I for one enjoy teaching others this trade. It is a dying art.For example, ten years ago there were four upholstery shops in this county now I have the only one. Not to brag, but I am a perfectionist and I try to do my best at everything I do.
Maybe I should have PM'd you and this whole thing would have gone in a different direction and for that I am at fault, but to put me down for the suggestion as some did made me cross and I figured that they didn't want to know what I was wanting to share.
With that said we can end this now and we can move on to sharing the art of upholstery. For all those who really want to ask me for advice, I am here and I will help as promised.
