I agree - You have to be carefull of shift kits. Keep it mild for a daily driver. I use a 2000 rpm (Corvette) stall speed converter. Its a few hundred rpm higher than stock.I think stock for a 700r4 in a car was around 1600 rpm.
A little higher stall speed helps keep the car from jerking when put in gear.Don Meyer, PhD-Mech Engr(48 GMC Trk/chopped/cab extended/caddy fins & a GM converted Rolls Royce Silver Shadow).

i would use a transgo jr. kit . this kit is NOT a snap your head off kit and it upgrades all the problems with these transmissions. i agree on the stall that don recommended, the number you want is a B-29 DBLF this is a 2075 stall and it has a brazed impeller. keep in mind some of the 85 units still had a 27 spline stator , before ordering a converter make sure you have a 27 (early) or 30 spline which is late. the number i gave you is for a 30 spline."IT'S 106 MILES TO CHICAGO , WE GOT A FULL TANK OF GAS , HALF A PACK OF CIGARETTES, ITS DARK, AND WERE WEARING SUNGLASSES"

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
