    ford trans question weird?!

the car makes a loud knocking sound almost like your hitting the flexplate with a hammer. and when your on the gas hard it will it will shift but it will stay at the same rpm for about 3-5 seconds and then hit hard instead of shifting instantly. the main thing is the loud klangy/knocking noise. this is on my friends car it is an 84 cougar 302. any advice would be greatly apprec'd. i already said what it hought it was but i just want to check my theroy.....scooter

You got the right flexplate on ? Found out the hard way with my friends 351W that when he swapped the trans of his 302 Cleveland, he swapped torque converter flexplate and all. It all bolted in but the clearances were wrong and it locked the motor up tight, apparantly the cross section of a 302C flexplate is thicker in dimension.

Dont know if this awnsers your question but boy oh bopy it was a learning curve for us.

Could be a cracked flexplate, Scooter.... Might want to drop the inspection cover and take a look...

Damaged flex plate, or the T/C to flexplate nut(s) have come loose(?); seems I heard of that happening, and causing the knocking noise.

Scooter, look first at the flex plate, then look to see if the modulator is hooked up,and before you pull the trans to fix the flex plate, pull the pan off and check for steel filings, and friction plate grit, some is normal and no worry, tons of it is good night. Don't forget that most of the fluid is in the torque convertor, and youmight as well flush the lines and cooler too. Hank
