    99 Taurus trans won't shift

I know there are many knowledgable people on this site but this may take someone thats 'up to date' to answer.
My family car is a 99 Taurus. It is an automatic trans. I have noticed a slight stumble or hesitation while stopping due to what seemed like a delayed downshift. Today the trans.wouldn't shift out of low gear. I pulled over and checked the fluid level and it is fine and doesn't smell burnt. I started the car and it drove fine and I made it home.
One other note,,there has been times recently that the engine has had a rough or weak idle while stopping but the trans. requires no vacuum source that I am aware of. And I have read on the internet by typing in "Taurus trans.won't shift" that when the speedometer doesn't work that the trans.may not shift. My speedometer works intermittantly. Any replies will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

the engine is a 3.0 V6, I'm guessing, and they come with AXOD trans, which are notoriouse for going out, some start slipping, some stop shifting but they all go out eventully. I put a AXOD into a '97 Windstar with 2 other guys, hard job, drop the cradle, and pull trans out of cradle from the top, put everything back, got it all togther, then come to find out, the used trans we put in, was also bad, so we had to do it all over again.

Lubricate the linkages of your TV cable....It attaches where your accelerator cable does. It sounds like it is binding....This will cause erratic shifting.

AXOD's do not have TV cables, there fully dependent on the ECU, assuming of course, he does in fact have a AXOD.

Check the speed sensor on the transmission and the connections to the back of your gauge cluster. If the connections are loose it will give you intermittent speedo operation and will mess up the transmission shifting. Also that sensor in the transmission could be bad or have a chewed up gear.
If I knew anything I'd be dangerous.

Thanks guys, all the preliminary checks seem ok. So, according to what I am reading this Ford Taurus had the death sentence pronounced on it the day it rolled off the assembly line. Defective transmissions from the get go.
