Unlock the steering column, and grab the steering shaft above the gear box. Rock the shaft back and forth, feel for play, watch for the shaft to move in and out.

Slop back and forth, or movement in and out, and it's bad.

If you do get slop (back and forth) make certain it's not in the linkage.
Thank you for the pointer! I'll be sure to look into it more this spring. The original gear box was adjusted to the max and I could turn the wheel in 15-20 degrees in either direction before the truck responded. The new gear box seems to make the truck drive its self.
