Measure the straight line distance at the top of the axle between the spring perch bolts. Subtract 5 1/4". That's the eye-to-eye dimension for the main leaf.

Another technique for installing the spring:
1. Install the complete spring into the U-bolts.
2. Install one of the shackles into the spring.
3. Wedge a block of wood between the end of the spring and the top of the axle to hold the shackle horizontal.
4. Put a similar thickness piece of wood under the other end of the spring.
5. Jack up the axle to put pressure against the spring until you can slide the second shackle into place.
