if i was doing it id have a single wire 12v alt, a good 12v bat. change all the bulbs, inatall all new gauges. if for some reason you need to keep a 6v gauge(or whatever 6v)you can get a resistor and put it in line so you wont burn the 6v gauge up. the starter i guess will be 12v, im sure you could update the heater motor, if not use the resistor. everything should go back neg. ground. if your keeping the same starter ive all ways hooked the 12v stright to the 6v starter, sure makes it turn faster and should last awhile driving it just sometimes.Originally posted by 54Belvedere

The 6v starter should do just fine if it's in good condition. Here's a link to an article where the guy did a whole rewire on a Plymouth.http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/...5_0310_rewire/ If you don't need to rewire, there's still some good pointers in there. I've used the "Runtz" resistor before, works great. See www.speedwaymotors.comYour Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

I think if change to neg ground you'll need to change the wiring around on any org gauges you use and the heater motor other wise they will work backwardsOriginally posted by lt1s10

Hey guys
Just saw all your posts about the 6 to 12 volt Plymouth deal. I had a 52 ply and now have a 49 Ply. ,both were 6 volt . If everything is good starter, WIRES., battery etc the 6 volt stuff works fine. I drove the 52 EVERY day for 2 years and it didnt start just 1 time[out of time] and 20 degrees outside. I dont start the 49 for sometimes 2 or 3 weeks and have to crank it for quite a while with no problem. A fork lift battery to fit , a 1 wire alt. 6 volt rebuilt starter and large battery wires and you are good to go. You will replace these things anyway. Just a thought for you.

6 volt can at times be reliable and I'm keeping my '51 Chevy 6 volt. Light bulbs and ign parts are often hard to find and have to be ordered so a failed ign condensor or coil could have the car on the side of the road for a day or so, that's most people's reason for converting. I run a TSC 6v tractor battery in mine.Originally posted by five-seven

It's a fairly easy job, I did my 54 Savoy and kept all orig. equipment with the exception of the generator(made my own alt mount). One wire alts are overated. If ya have more Q when the time comes I (am sure theres more) would be happy to help with specifics.Justin RFFR
