glad to see you bought the '50. is it a 2 or 4 door i can't remember? just pulled my 235 last night:( hated to see it go. i'm selling it on ebay now and started it at $40.00. if yours needs an engine this would be a steal.
Cut it out to good steel, weld in a patch, grind it smooth and get the bumper rechromed.
My '50 is a 4dr Fleetline, I'm gonna suicide the rear doors though. The 235 in mine is in good shape, only needs a fuel pump and, there only 23.99 from NAPA auto parts. Shouldn't be nothing to get that old 6 Cyl running, the owner I bought it from said he had it running and, he drove it around ( this was b4 the fuel pump went ).Quote:

Thank's Dave, Tig, Mig or Arc or dosent it matter? My friend tried to tell me that I had to get a new bumper but, I knew there was a fix, just didn't know what it was.Quote:

Tig is always the easiest weld to clean up if you make the peices fit right, but whatever kind of welder you have will work fine.
Thanks, I don't have a tig, all I got is an arc welder but, I could rent 1 if need be.Quote:

In your case Matt, seein' as how yer lookin' at a (self indicated) 3 years project, for the time bein' you can just put a AAA "bumper sticker" over the hole and no one will evan guess it's a covered up hole... and when ya paint the bumpers the same colour as the car (like ya mentioned you wuz gonna do) you can also paint over the sticker too... :p
yep, I got my 3 years all planed out
1st year: get motor running, suicide rear doors, put new exaust in , add some chrome smoothies, do all bodywork then prime and paint ( candyapple red or some kinda deep metalic red ).
2nd year: Order an interior kit from www.rodinteriors.com ( Red and white V8 style, or nifty 50 ), find somtin else to do to it with money left over.
3rd year: Have the painted bumpers chromed, find somthing else to do on it.
Even though I plan to have it compleated in 3 years, it may take a little longer and, even though it would/should be compleated in 3 years, there will always be somthing to do to it.
I'm gonna have to follow Dave's instructions on the rust hole.
I know stickerz are cheap but, I want the car to last and retain a value that would hopefully grow, and I would like to fix the hole cause it's 1 hole and not a swiss cheese bumper.Quote:

Stickerz are cheep.. :p
One more question, the bolt pattern on the car is 5 on 4.75 and, that = 5 on 4 /3/4 so, I could use 4/3/4" bolt pattern aftermarket smoothies and, use those same wheels when/if i decide to change the rear end to a Camero rear end?
The wheels should be interchangeable with Camaro wheels. There's not much chance that you can suicide the rear doors. The shape of the body makes it impossible. You need a straight doorpost to mount the hinges on. Both hinge pins need to be on the same centerline. The upper hinge will have to stick out 3 or 4 inches to line up with the bottom one on your car. You can't move the bottom one in or the door won't open. If you want to do some customizing start with a new grille and a rolled pan. Throw that rusty bumper in the trash.
Now that you got your hot rod it's time to change your avatar. Park the Benz out back.
While you're at it change that thing about the future of tomorrow. It's kind of a mixed metaphor. since tomorrow means the future the way you used it. You're claiming to be the future of the future. It should say the leaders of tomorrow or leaders of the future. You get what I'm saying?
Where can I get a new chrome bumper for a '50 Chevy, I wanted a chrome bumper in the long run NE way, so maby it will all work out. Kinda sucks about suiciding the doors but, it will still look when it's finished.
I got good news, at 7:23 tonight my car arrived at my house on the lowboy so, IT"S FINALLY HERE. We called a towing service because we were having trouble getting a Uhaul trailer. I also found out that the green and plaid seats are just seat covers, the origional grey interior looks in tact and just in need of cleaning, I didn't pull the covers off yet but, from looking through the rips in the front seat cover, they look good.door panals do need to be replaced or heivily cleaned, and the headliner needs replacing. Well, heres a picture, it was late and somewhat dark so, I had to edit the brightness and contrast but, I'll have better pics tomorrow.
Al, thanks, I got your suggestions about the avatar and signature and as you can probabbly see, they are both changed but, I couldent come up with a good signature but, that new one will do for now.
Well Matt167, I warned you and now it's too late! Your hooked for life!!:D :D
Congrats on getting your low-rider home, that is a great feeling I know. Good luck and enjoy, looks like a dandy start! ;)
Gots to go to TSC to get a new battery, I tried to charge the old one but, the trouble light came on the charger.
Yep, Brickman I'm hooked and prowd of it.
It looks good Matt. It should keep you busy for a while. You can still suicide the front doors.
I got a battery today, tomorow I will put it in and, I just might put some gas in the carb and see if it would fire up, but I'll test everything else anyway ( horn, lights and raido ).
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, my mom called around for a fuel pump for my '50, she called about 6 places but, 1 of them asked if the car had vacume wipers, she told him she thought so ( that's what the former owner said the car had ), he than told her it would cost 96.000 rather than 20.000, my question is, does vacume wipers or electric wipers make a diffrence on a fuel pump? We ordered 1 from NAPA for $19.99 and they didn't ask about vac wipers or anything, just the year and engine size.
Congrats on starting to work instead of just planning, Matt. Now if ya could stretch the front doors about a foot, move the door post back, panel in where the old rear doors used to be, take about 3" out of the roof, lean the posts back, section the car about 4", channel it another 2", lose all the chrome, and french in the lights, it would start looking way kewl. Shouldn't take more than a week or 60 to get that few mods done. See ya next Saturday for your next homework assignment.!!!!!!
Congrats!!! ,, glade to here you found something ya like , !
here's a different avatar matt > "I played around with, so's ya could see her a'lil better ,.... if ya want to use it" :D

You'll have to block off the holes if they have them or the pump won't suck.. mebbe that's the reason it's bad now??? The older ones CAN be rebuilt too... YOU could always just install an electric fuel pump back near the tank and wire it into the ignition switch as a "Don't steal my car" device... And then use the same one IF you put a SBC in there also...
With a little luck you should be able to rig electric wipers up on your Chebby.. mebbe somethang on the lines of a Nova system used on Camaro, Nova and all the other GM F-body's...
Thank's streets, I'll check that out, maby the vac line is weather checked or leaky, I put gas in the carb and tried to start it, It didn't start but it turned over, should the starter button provide power to the starter even when the key is compleatly out of the ignition? I did know the fuel pump could be rebuilt and, I called around for a diaphram kit but no parts place had them.
I also changed the plugs and, tried to start it again.
I just want to get it running this weekend, all that stuff you mentioned sounds a little compilicated for me but, thanks anyway.Quote:

Thanks, I will use that as my avatar. Could you take the big picture and color the car in candy apple red or a color close to it and color right over the chrome, Please, I don't have very good photoshop capabilities.Quote:

thanks again Streets, I'm going to wait for my dad to help me get it running cause, I think it needs new/cleaned points and maby a new condensor and, both of which I have never had to change so, I gots to watch my dad and learn how.
Oh, I can only see fuel lines run into the fuel pump and, I don't think there are vac lines.
Well, MATT, I am a little late with my congratulations, but it looks like you got a nice start to really cool project there. Those old chebbies can be fun and they really lend them selves to some cool customizing. Best wishes to you buddy. :) :) :)
"I don't agree with the idea of painting over the chrome  :p but ...."Quote:

this is the first try... the pix is all funny ?! get me another pix in the daylight and I can try again.... and I'll just take off all the chrome for ya "if that's the plan?".
"Looks like ya got your self a few ghosts in the yard there" ..:D
I want to paint the bumper so, it would look arlight until I could get it chromed in a year or two when I have funding for it. That one looks good but, I'll go eat dinner and then resize the pics I took then post them.
Actully just leave the chrome or cut out the rust to make it look ok cause, the car will have a chrome bumper when it's finished.
Here the new picture is, taken in daylight hours. I almost forgot to say thank you.
I may have figured out what is wrong with my '50 and it's starting problems, it's a slim chance but, the former owner installed some old green taillights under the hood right behind the grill so the grill would light up green, he said he wired them so they would turn on when the key is on, he put 1 wire on the coil, I don't know if it is positive or negitive, the other wire goes to ither a ground or powersource to the passanger side horn and powers the light on that side , the wire is spliced with a t connector and then runs to the other light to power it. I was thinking that his wiring job may be grounding out the coil causing no spark or, indicating a bad coil because the lights run off the coil's powersource, I find it weird that the horn, the former owners green light contraption and the engine ignition system don't work and the former owners green light system is connected to both.
hows this ? :3dSMILE:
"not the best but I'll play around with it again later tonight "

Thanks Treekiller, I like the top 1 the best, like the color, I just like the stance and the roofline of it stock, I want to rod the rest though. The bottom 1 is a very good job but, I think it looks a little funky, the fact that you cut out the rear doors is cool though.

Kinda but they wouldn't be as neon and he didn't put ground effects on but, if he did they wouldn't be there now, they would be disposed of.
the last red one I posted is about as good as it gets....
"But I did find this one ":D

Thanks, Treekiller, the red 1 u did gives me a good idea of what it would look like.
I looked over the green light wiring and, the positive power wire is spliced into the coil power wire with one of those connectors that cut a notch in the wires when they snap togther, I was thinking that it may have gotten corroded causing power failur. I cut the lead wire that was spliced into the coil power wire that powered the green lights then stripped the end off that the lights were still connected to and then touched it to the positive side of the battery, they then lit up so, that's how I know the wire running to the coil is bad, because the lights do work, any other ideas?
Just to better my explination here are a few pics of the green light wiring, in the first pic, the 2 wires that are sitting loose on the battery are the 2 halves of the 1 I cut.
Just figured I'd show where the lights are located.
Heres that pre splice conector thing
oops no pic in this 1
