I've done oak with Spar Varnish. While it looks good at first, it just didn't last to long.
Someone else did poly urethane and it flaked off after a couple years. kinda like powder coating imho..

Thanks for the input. I really hate doing things twice as a few other items on this truck. I see lots of nice looking wood but they sure are pricey.
