Thread: Pontiac to Chevy engine mounts.

I have a 1980 Firebird with a big block Chevy in it. The car originally came with a 301 Pontiac v8. When they installed the big block they just welded the clamshells right to the x member. The holes in the clam shell don't line up with the holes in the cross member. I would like to redo this and install mounts that would bolt up using the original cross member holes. Any ideas?

You actually going to use a 301? Most folks round this site think of it as a boat anchor. I've got one that's been sitting about a decade, it had a fresh build before the car got wrecked.

Anyway, my best guess would be to break out the gas axe and put the correct ones back in.

It sounds like you want to keep the BBC, just clean up the mounts? If so, Camaro mounts for a SBC should work.

I'll check to see that the mounts aren't reversed. I've been running it this way for about 5 years. My large tube headers clear everything so they must have got the engine located close. The only real problem is the rubber in the shells is starting to look pretty rough and they are welded in. Maybe I'll just drill holes into the x member where the mounts are welded on, grind of the old mounts and bolt new ones in the holes. I found some solid mounts that will replace the clam shell type mount. Do solid mounts work okay on the street?

Thanks Roger-------I know you don't like my dashes,,,,,,,,but-------and even without correctly spelling polyurethane, I'm pretty sure that it could be 100% understood that If I recommended polyurthene-that it also meant instead of solid steel OR rubber

Just trying to be sure the message is clear, Jerry. I've just never seen any value in a bunch of extra punctuation marks, other than three or four periods which infer continued thought by standard practice, and I find that they often result in confusion, either the originator or the reader. Why add confusion, unless it serves a purpose. And anyone who believes that they result from unintentional pauses on the keys? Well, PT Barnum spoke about them, years ago. Kinda falls in line with the importance of using capital letters correctly, and Uncle Jack.

I doubt you can do much better than your idea of thru drilling the holes, and bolting new ones in.

Roger-I had a pop up message about something with the keys and that if you hold them down they repeat- well about the only thing I hesitate on is the puntuation marks and that seems to be the ones that I have trouble with. I'm not a typist or office type person and I'm not really fast with this computer stuff. So I guess that I'll have to try harder to please you.

As a note to some of my last couple of days/evenings - been busy as the new grandson arrived Saturday evening at 7 pm and its been quite hectic going back and forth for Robin to help out and me working here to finish a boat engine foe a big meet up in Wisconsin over the week end for the guy.

I started to organize the group of degrees, licenses, ratings that I have and it discussed me after doing about a page and half- the letters and numbers don't mean anything unless you know what they are and if you don't know you don't care. so I guess that I'll continue without a signature on here like some.

I understand Capital letters but what do you mean by Uncle Jack? I got a cousin named Jack

Thanks guys, I'm going to install poly mounts. I found a site the lists the measurements and part numbers for the brackets on the block. One of my is correct and one is wrong. There was also a picture of the correct clam shells. Mine look wider so maybe they are covering the original holes. I'm still going to mark the holes when I grind my old ones off just in case. I figured poly mounts would be better.
