    I expect you're right about going in from the back. Are your bulbs H4 style halogens or old sealed beams? If they're already H4's then replacing is not nearly the chore, I would think, and there are a lot of higher output bulbs out there that you can switch to. I'd recommend buying a pair as they often "look" different to oncoming traffic if you keep one old, one new.
