I know a guy who built one for a 32 coupe. He used metal and welded it all together and then painted it wood grain. It turned out sweet! Here's another idea, have you ever looked at a over head console from a suburban? Maybe you could cut it down, trim the base and attach it with brackets on the inner roof. Then cover it how you want.
