You might also consider getting an older car that is in good condition bodywise but maybe needing some upgrades and work mechanically. You say you are ok in that department so you could fix those areas pretty easily. I'm like you, I am no bodyman and hate sanding and painting, but I don't mind doing the other parts.

If you take your time and look at a lot of cars, you will find one that fits that description, I bet.
