I got the hot rod bug again. a few questions

Hello I recently joined the forum after a renewed interest in hot rods. I used to read several car mags and dream of many cars in my teens. I owned a few cool older ones(72valiant 72dart 79camaro 71firebird etc) None of which were more than beaters but still loved.

For some years I gave up on having a hot rod with money being short etc.

Now I have the bug again. I have experience with the mechanical part but no welding/autobody knowledge. I want to get something pre 72. I love putting the work into cars and was wondering where I should look to learn about welding and body work? Books, videos etc. Or should I just start getting back in the network of hot rodders and find an experienced person with reasonable pricing/more complete car?

I am partial to 50-60's pickups if that matters.

Thanks in advance I know everyone is willing to help in here.

psychobilly451, welcome to CHR. You may get a lot of answers to this, but my suggestion is to look for courses at your local community colleges or vocational/tech schools. Hands on learning and training for welding and fabricating is probably the best way to learn the trade and the tricks. You could do it on your own with books and video, but it would likely be time consuming and prone to errors. You could also look for a friend who has some experience and learn from them. But if I were looking to do it, I'd be looking for courses first. just my .02.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail....but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying..."Damn....that was fun!

I have been looking at tech school classes. $500 for a class + $700 for a welder... I might just find a new friend and spend the money on the project car heheheheh

You might also consider getting an older car that is in good condition bodywise but maybe needing some upgrades and work mechanically. You say you are ok in that department so you could fix those areas pretty easily. I'm like you, I am no bodyman and hate sanding and painting, but I don't mind doing the other parts.

If you take your time and look at a lot of cars, you will find one that fits that description, I bet.

If by potown you mean poughkeepsie, there are active street rod clubs in your area. Events are generally listed in the newspaper. Hank
