well i have done that too . if you try the switch. it will work .the engine is kicking back when the starter is trying to turn the engine . not spinning fast enough like better battery /cable . bendix can very in they sell rebuilts. you want a new HD roller bendix . check air gap flywheel to bendix and going to far in to the wheel do you have the back strap on ? the right bolts. starter bolts ? if the starter is moving side to side it will brake lots of parts
