i have an 69 427bb.i put it in my 82 olds cutlass.after many mods.i got it to fit.know when i try to start it. it brake the starter gear. the first time i cranked it it was fine.then it broke the gear.i have tryed a couple of staters and it brake evry one.i realy need some help....

to much timming and CR will kick the nose off the starter. i run a switch to turn on the ignition. this is separate from the key switch you have now .i used the old key switch to turn the engine over. but first i get the engine spinning and then turn the ignition with the new switch . i have some verry hi CR big block and this works the best for me and the starters had a 548 14.8 cr big block that i used a stock gm starter work fine. find a iron nose for the starter gm used this nose on beet trucks 366/427 and stick cars to

it is not brakeing the the nose it is just brakeing the bendix gear.

well i have done that too . if you try the switch. it will work .the engine is kicking back when the starter is trying to turn the engine . not spinning fast enough like better battery /cable . bendix can very in they sell rebuilts. you want a new HD roller bendix . check air gap flywheel to bendix and going to far in to the wheel do you have the back strap on ? the right bolts. starter bolts ? if the starter is moving side to side it will brake lots of parts

let me start over.it started fine about ten times.then bam broke starter. it can not tell if the starter is moving but i know that it is not going to far.i am going to hook up an switch for ingition.when i replace the starter i am going to use new bolts and make an brace for rear of starter.

ok try that. they will do that the starter will work for some time and fail could be 1 or 50 times your problem is not new been thru it .i fix all my problems with the switch been starting my car this way 15 years just trying to help you?

Yeah, what Pat said. Gives the engine a chance to spin up for a bit before it has to battle the ignition and resultant power strokes....

Are you using a stock starter? If so, you might try a mini high torq starter. I was going thru starters left and right on my boat, till I just bite the bullet and bought a mini high torq starter. Havnt had a problem since then. BTW this is just a 10.5:1 550 hp (650 if you count the funny gas) ford big block.
