i like to fill them up until it runs out the plug hole pat, then you know for sure. i had a 9" in my round track car one time that you couldnt get to the check plug real easy so i went by the book and i read the book wrong, burnt up 2 dif. before i took the time to stick my finger in the hole and check it and it was a 1/2 pt. off. 3-31/2 pts. is a good start.
