    Angry stuck oil filter !Help!

I have a 72 chevelle and the dam oil filter will not come off. I got a oil wrench, but that just bent the filter. I stuck a screwdriver through the filter and that just ripped the filter in half, so now the bottom piece is off and the top piece is still on the block. Anybody have any suggestions on how to get the top piece off the block?

This is what has happened, you have overtightened the filter on to the gasket, when the engine got hot the first time like that, the oil and heat mix caused the gasket has squeezed it's way into things, locking it on permanently. I don't know what to tell you, other than try a set of channel locks on the remains, or remove the filter mount if you can and try to get it off in a vise.

If you cant get in there with channel locks or anything, try a chisel on the part closest to the block. see how that works. later,Joe

Pull all the filter stuff off and you'll see the end plate has holes in it, use a chisel and tap it around, or make a wrench out of scrap to hook into the holes.

If you have to, you can bust the piece out. That is if nothing else works. The threaded plate is easily replaced.
Sometimes, it is like a stuck bolt. Tighten it a bit, then back it off.
Next time, tighten by hand, then 1/4 turn. DO NOT USE A WRENCH!
The oil filter plate is easy to replace. Do not get a plate without the bypass intact.

could also just try to split the threads off of the oil filter with a sharp chisel...just be carful not to hit the adapter plate.

Maybe a small rotary tool could cut some material away and release some pressure.

I had the same thing happen years ago with my Mom's car. I tried every thing available, and finally got it off by using a big pipe wrench on the shredded base of the filter. I put it up to the base, with the handle down towards the floor and the jaws on either side of the filter, like this... U____. Good Luck!

put some oil down the cylinders at least, leaving it without oil might cause the rings to lock up.

Once the oil filter is off there are two bolts that hold that nipple thing on.
