But in turning the wheels while up on jacks, I noticed a 'hitch' in the rear-end! Must be a broken ring or pinion gear. Each time around the differetial would jump/bump up an inch or two.

Son of a gun - I was ready to ride!

Its a typical 10 bolt - no posi.

I guess I'll upgrade to posi rather than try to fix this one?

id drop the cover and see if anything is broke. sounds like you might have your drive shaft in a bind.
