if you couldnt turn the motor with the push rods out and the spark plugs out of it, then there it something on top of the piston. if you have the cam in and the valves adj. than you could be way off on the timing gears. take the spark plugs out, take the push rods out or loosen them and the motor should turn. will it turn back the other way? no plugs no comp.
