My 40 Chevy does not have a title or VIN plate. I have tracked the last three owners who have modified the car in one way or another. I Have no idea why the VIN was removed but I'm certain it isn't stolen. The car is approx. 75% complete.
Has anyone else ever ran into this kind of problem with an old ride? I would expect "red flags" if a person had a newer vehicle without a VIN or title but this is a street rod project.
Do you know of any yards to find old wrecked chevys for sale with titles? I'm in NW Ohio.

Check with the Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles, there may be another way to do it.

If the body is off the frame, I'd check the frame for numbers and stampings. Most cars had the serial number stamped on the frame.

did you look on the passenger side floor just in front of the seat and on the driver's side door pillar?

I've checked everywhere and no luck. New floors are in, frame was powder coated and can't see any stampings, and nothing on the door frames. In Ohio you must have a VIN. If you have only a VIN a NO title, you can be issued a salvage title and have the car inspected at an assigned Ohio State Patrol post. For self builds you don't need a VIN or Title but MUST have reciepts for all major parts like frame, body, engine, ex...
Looks like I'm stuck if I can't find a "useless" 1940 out there WITH a title.

Tech is right about looking on the passenger side in front of the seat, etc. Also, a lot of cars used motor numbers in this era.....

On a 40's Chevy like this where on the frame would the VIN numbers be stamped? If they are near the front them mine are gone to because the front end is from a 79 Z28 and the old front end is GONE. If this is the case then is there any need for me to worry? I have a title for the car, etc so that's no big deal but I just learned about the VIN, etc and how you need to have one I guess.

I 've heard that in the ads in Hemmings there are companys that sell titles and vins for old Hot Rods... just stay close to the year of your car
Thats how Boyd got in trouble he was buying them and putting them on brand new stuff he was building and reg them as old cars the state of Ca. says he was cheating them out of taxes and fees
But no where did they say you could not do that as long as it was going on a car of like year

My entire floor was replaced and the front end is not the original. I am going to have to buy a title somehow, somewhere. I'm not concerned about buying a VIN plate. Both would be fantastic, but I really only need a title.
To answer the above question, If you have the title to the car but the VIN is gone, just go get the registration and tags. I've never heard of the BMV checking for the VIN to. The title is all you need to get it registered and on the road. I would just stamp the VIN numbers from that title on the frame somewhere, just in case. That puts the two together.

I just reg my project here in So. Cal. I had the title all the reg cards from 1960 to 1985 which was the last time it was reg and also had both plates The car has been in the family sence it was new DMV still made me get the vin verfied before they would register it..... and on top of that they would not let me keep the old plates on the car at that time........ So when I get the new plates I have to take them and the old ones to DMV and turn the new ones back in and have the number changed back to the old plates What a pain!!!!!!!

So in my expirence you'd be better off with both.......
