i guess i will have him weld a diamond shaped plate on both sides. (he insists it doesnt need it.)
i know he welded the arm on his daughters rod and it has been driven for years.
and this is by FAR the FUNNEST car i have ever gotten my mitts on!

Here's a couple more ways: Take a piece of 3/16" thick flat stock about 1/2" wide and 5 or 6 inches long, wrap it around the top of the arm and down both sides so it extends past the weld joint at least 3/4". Weld it completely solid, both sides and ends, and then dress it with a grinder until it becomes almost invisible. The first picture below is not a steering or Pittman arm and it's not welded completely, but it helps explain how I would wrap it... The second and third pictures are a steering arm from a Jeep spindle that needed a second hole added. It was strapped just on both sides with 5/16 round stock, welded, and ground. After a little flat black from a spray-can it looked like it was made that way. Either way works and the joint will never break.
it is odd
old ladies LOVE this thing.
whoda thunk?
got the plexiglass in the doors and used long strips of adheisive tape velcro as window regulators.
it works very well and was dirt cheap.
i got tired of having to reinvent the guts on these doors.
now i am looking for jute carpet padding as a noise damper/insulating material to put in the doors etc.
use some spray on glue and get busy.
i also need to reinforce the beds box walls to reduce rattling
at this rate i will have this car dialed in by spring.
Good for you Billy!
once i get the insulation installed.
i am covering everything with black carpet.
that will add a bit of deadening/insulation itself.
a lot of guys say they want to hear the throaty roar etc.
but between the incredible wind noise
the rattles and squeaks
and the engine
i cant hear myself think!
eventually i would like to have music in this car.
just because it looks barebones/old school
doesnt mean i cant have a heater ,tunes and be comfy.
I'm with you. I gotta be warm, and I gotta have my tunes. That open header stuff is cool for a few mins, but I ain't 20 anymore. Mine isn't quiet but you can listen to the radio and it doesn't drive you nuts after a few mins. I have found as I have gotten older the noise that I used to like, IE race cars, open headers, loud rock and metal, now just puts me on edge after a bit. I can't even listen to a whole ac/dc CD anymore. After about 3 or 4 songs the beat just gets me edgy, and not in a good way. Loud exhaust does the same thing to me. I used to drive around a gutted 55 Chevy, ex drag car, open headers and no radio...................... loved it. Now I'd shoot my self after about 20 mins.................... Ain't getting older fun..................................
heck
i dont even drink anymore.
what happened?
hood ornament.
i went to a mom n pop trophy store and when i told em what i wanted it for they let me root around in the back room looking for cool stuff.

those 26" thrush's really work.
i was sitting in my truck after a cc meeting and 2 guys walked up.
they didnt know it was running.
but when i step on it everybody can hear it.
I know what you guys mean about interior noise. When I first got my coupe on the street I had 3 1/2 inch tailpipes on it (see pic). It looked mean and sounded good... outside. Inside the noise was deafening and was a gauranteed headache in about 5 miles.:whacked: I kept the same Cherry Bomb mufflers, but reduced the tailpipes to 2 1/4 inch. Now it's just a pleasant rumble inside and still sounds good outside.:3dSMILE:
Billy, how 'bout some pics of your velcro window regulators? My son has been searching for an inexpensive solution to the problem of window regulators for his '31 Murray body sedan.
jim
the regulators are simply some self adheisive velcro tape.
the section with the hooks is wrapped around the bottom edge of the window in the center
it trails up and out of the top of the inside window sill
and i stuck a hunk of the fuzzy part of the velcro on the interior panel of the door.
pull up and stick to the door
wah lah
Love the coupe.......and Bill's 27 is cool too.. Finally made it over here as a member, thanks Billy zz for the link! (F Bill from ECJ5)
A good source for the Velcro is upholstery supply places like Sailrite or if you are in Fargo or other places with a Mac's store they have it by the foot off a roll. It seems a lot of places love to markup Velcro products wayyyy too much but the right places make it reasonable to use.
my entire regulator cost was about 10 bucks.
i didnt feel like scouring the junkyards/internet for some regulators that MIGHT work with LOT of modifications.
i just wanted my windows to go up and down. ;)
classy? nope
effective and dirt cheap? yepper!
how's your new cruizer doing on the streets, Billy???? Gotta be a blast to run around in!!!!
huge fun dude.
folks ask it they can take pictures of it.
girls dig it.
truckers honk and flash lights at me.
there are things i want to do still but they are just little stuff.
i am going to put a wood floor/cover on the bed.
i have storage spaces back there and i want to be able to lock them.
insulate the cab
stick a stereo in it.
just frills
but i have NEVER had this much fun on pavement.
i am toying with the idea of making a false sunroof for this car.
some kind of super tough and VERY uv resistant canvas to put over the steel roof.
with maybe snaps along the edges.
thanks bro
i had some hardwood flooring scraps
wah-lah

Hmmmmm. Looks like ROAD TRIP TIME to me!!!!! Have fun Billy!!!!!!!!!!!
An inherent part of the design, Billy.... Keeps the trip from getting boring!!!!!!!!!!
update.
i am going to buy a remanufactured stock 302 engine that has a 7 year 100'000 mile parts and labor guarantee
free shipping $1200
that way i wont have to worry about that 31year old engine with an unknown past anymore.
Good for you Billy! A little piece of mind is always a good thing. Right?
i am going with having a seamstress sew a border of magnetic strips along all the edges of the black ragtop material i have.
you see fellas.
the only reason i am doing this at all is.
my roof is VERY rough looking and i will never get it nice and smooth.
this way it will look good right away and it will be easily removable for cleaning etc.
update
the cab got so hot it would burn your hand in the desert sun.
i put a double layer of heat sheild stuff.
(it looks like bubble wrap with foil on both sides)
inside the cowl, roof and rear walls.
it is like night and day.
the inside of the roof is warm now but not hot.
mission accomplished for 15 bucks!
Good Job Billy! And reasonable too! Is it quieter inside now also?
i got it installed
3 year unlimited mile warranty.
i bought it from checker.
thanks man.
driving it makes me feel like a little kid.
ya know?
if i had known that as a (supposed) grown-up.
i would get to own AK-47's, hot rods and antique jeeps.
i would have been a MUCH happier boy.
my automobile inexperience reared it's ugly head again.
i overfilled the 9" ford rear end and it blew the seal.
going to replace it tomorrow so i can drive it to colorado for the weekend
(300 miles each way)
Billy, if the rear end is slightly over full and has good axle bearings and seals it usually is not a problem.
My experience is usually what happens is the axle vent gets plugged and the excess pressure is what forces the gear lub past the seals. just something else you might want to check
yeah i need to pry that little cap off and stick a wire in it to make sure it is clear.
thanks for the reminder!
nice project look foward to following this one
replaced the seal
and powerwashed everything back there.
all is clean, dry and operating properly .
i have decided that these are the headers i am going with.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l2...L_155450f3.jpg
well
$955.02 later
i am waiting for ups to deliver my reversed corvair box , roadster headers and kingpins.
i hired my buddy to fab up some bombproof motor mounts.
then i will be done once and for all!*
*done that is until i get my grubby mitts on some more moolah to throw at it.
Good lookin' set of tubes Billy!!!! "Done" is such a subjective term!!!!
