You will spend the money to get it done but I would try someone like K&N.
I would try and put the biggest air-cleaner on the engine you can.

Looks similar to the ones I have on my Olds, but it is a 2 5/8". Usually found on 1 and 2 barrel carbs. I know you get them from most hotrod shops, JC Whitney, the NightProwlers.com, Hot Rod and Custom Supply, Speedway, and probably Autozone, Advanced Auto and many other places. Lot of places sell the filter with a new unit for about $10. Erik is right, K&N have just the filters for about $30 each. They are cleanable life time filters, but not sure they are worth the extra bucks. I have K&N's on my Olds, but see no real improvement over the paper ones.

Speedway sells a house brand version, washable, cotton, just like K&N, 3 7/8 diameter (fits most of the custome 2 bbl types) for $8

It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.
