i ahe heard ye you still can other times i cant. i need to know. because my car still has the lead paint on it from the factory & need to find some authentic lead paint fo rher. any ideas to where i can get some? my car is painted classic white & golen brown.

No, I doubt it, I belive it was banned in the 80's. I would just try to get laquer paint in the colors you need besides, can you really tell the diffrence between lead paint and non lead paint by it's appearence?
No!!!!!! Lead was banned back in the 70. Children where eating it off their baby beds. Hardees came out with glasses that has lead paint and kids were licking the glasses. Laqure paint has been banded buy the gov. It donsn't meet goverment specs. It has to many chemicals in it. There is a 5.0 spec an it didn't meet the grade.
I belive I can still get laquer paint in Ny, I think it's certine states like calli that it is illegal to sell or use, I could be wrong but, when I asked about Gloss black for my car and the cleark at Napa and he said it would be a laquer. I wasn't shure when lead paint was banned but I knew it was.Quote:

I still use laquer. I spray it thinned waaaay down as a top coat for large format digital prints on photo paper. It dries faster than water based products so the paper doesn't wrinkle and it dries faaast. The last 2 cars I painted i did in laquer. Still available @ the local auto parts store. Just wear a good fitting charcoal filter mask.Quote:

You can forget LEAD based paint....the closest you may get will be industrial grades enamels. Try NAPA.

I know I've lived under a rock for the last 2+ decades but what automotive finishes had lead in em'? I don't recall laquer having lead. If it did, then that would explain my not remembering as I've sprayed more than a few gallons over the years. I thought lead was used in house paint, etc. :CRY:
Yeah- the early enamels thru the 50's that I know of. It's some 16 kinds of hell to get off too. I sand blast it off, and if some idiot has put Por-15 on it I charge 'em double.
Not that I don't have a deep respect for how things were done back in the day, but why use 50 year old technology when new technology is safer, easier to use and looks just as good (if not better)?

Just a comment. I worked one six month stint as part of my Chemistry training at National Lead Co. (Dutch Boy Paint) in Phila. before lead was banned in paint. Workers used to come into my lab and drink coffee from the same beakers I used to run Pb tests and I tried to stay clean but by the end of the six months I had black feces just like the rest of the crew and I was glad to get out of there! The treatment is to inject solutions of EDTA directly into the blood stream to complex the lead and help excrete it but otherwise it accumulates in the nervous system. This is why tetraethylead was banned as an anti-knock agent in gasoline. Maybe that led (lead?) to the expression to "get the lead out" as a comment to slow thinkers? Maybe that is my problem, my problem, my problem? On the other comment, I don't recall that lacquers have any lead at all, in that case it is the VOCs that offend the feds (Volatile Organic Compounds, solvents). Still I suppose National Lead is still doing a good business because Pb3O4 (red lead) is a main ingredient in lead-acid batteries. Although the Pb/Pb3O4/PbSO4/H2SO4 battery is really a very nasty device and other lighter batteries such as lithium batteries have more intrinsic voltage, it is said that even if hybrid electric cars catch on they will still use lead acid batteries because even though they are heavy the technology to make them and recycle them is very well established. So I guess National Lead will have a good market for a long time and when the batteries are sealed as most are today, they are more environmentally clean than the old "add water" batteries.

The only paint I know of that still has lead in it is some marine paints. I bought some in oregon a few years back and it had a huge warning label on it saying so. I used it on the rims on my boats trailer and the paint still looks great, even exposed to the salt water when launching.

I have heard that trains are painted with lead paint, as are bridges. Don't know for sure, but i could go for some of that paint used on trains - new it is quite glossy, and sure does wear well!

diesel locomotives arent painted in lead paint. the cars are still painted in lead paint to help as an extra coat/shield to the elements. steam locomotives really arent painted just coated in certain things to make them last longer. why not iport lead paint? where can we still get it?

i know it is toxic but in paint i dont plan on anyone eating it! i will not use lead gas i will use additive but paint should be ok to use. ::confused: because i dont want to redo the entire car to paint because i cant find lead paint. and that is lead paint and it is what my car was built with. unless there is a paint that isnt any different as far as color and durrability goes i will stick with lead based. i know lead is harmful to the enviornment but paint cant be that bad. and it lasts long time!

You should be able to find paint that matches your car at anyplace that sells auto paint. Also, it is probably more harmful to the enviroment in paint because of paint overspray.Quote:

Dont kown about other states, but we use a paint called red lead. A gallon is about 30 pounds it is used to coat galv. and black iron pipe underground. PS its also good own helpers hardhats old lead head in fla.

If you do find some lead based paint in the original color (don't hold your breath) it still won't be the original paint. If you change the color it will be just as original as repainting with the same color. It's illeagal to import lead based paint. It will never clear customs. :whacked:

i couldnt help but laught at your reply!! bno. i just plan to RESTORE the car as original as posable. as far as oil and lead gas. i will stick to the BEST OIL MONEY CAN BUY. and lead additive. why are you thinking it is a joke that i want my 57 as original as can be? i am sorry but i dont take the easy way out. i never do it easy i always do it right! that way it SHOULD BE if i cant i will do the best alternitive posable! i am 16 years old and have 1 part time job mabe 2 soon and school! so that tells you now determined i am!

The best thing you can do for your car is get a color that matches your car or in your case get the 2 colors for your 2 tone, and do the whole car instead of repainting bad sections. The best paint you can get for it ( for going original ) is good laquer paint or if you cannot get it in your state, you could smuggle it in from another state that sells it and don't get cought using it or smuggeling it in for that fact, trust me, I'm also 16 and also I have my '51 Chevy Fleetline 4dr and although I'm not compleatly restoring, but for the most part, the only thing not original is the Thrush glasspack I put in it but that's for now, in the near future I will paint it dark purple ( originally paint code : 402, meyland black ). Also, a concourse restoration's paint job is not lead based paint but just a really really good and expensive 1, I'm not saying your going for concourse resto but they are the restoration of restoration's so lead paint isn't really nessesary. Really my point is, by using lead based paint which you can't get into the states NE way isn't going to make your car any more original than a non lead based paint.Quote:

Chronic Low-Level Lead Exposure
Chronic (long-term) overexposure to lead can irreversibly effect the blood forming, nervous, urinary and reproductive systems. Damage to these systems can be felt in many possible ways. Examples include: Impaired language skills Loss of hearing Loss of appetite Weight loss Headache Abdominal, muscle, or joint pain Limp wrist High blood pressure Reproduction problems: miscarriages, infertility, retarded fetal development, low birth weight Hypertension Unusual tiredness Irritability Constipation Kidney disease.
Acute Lead Exposure
Acute (short-term) exposure to high lead levels can lead to acute encephalopathy (brain disease) which may progress to seizure, coma, and death from cardiovascular arrest. Conditions that would elevate lead blood levels to 100 ΅g lead/dl blood and breathing an atmosphere contaminated with 100 mg lead/m3 are immediately dangerous to life and health.
A very small amount of lead absorption can elicit immediate adverse health effects both in adults and children; however, the same amount of lead absorption in infants and children can be especially harmful to them because of their rapidly developing nervous systems.
This is taken from a material data sheet on lead.

You didn't have to tell me your age Hippy I already guessed that from your unusual Question. If you really want to do it right you wouldn't be looking for lead based paint.
This is a hot rod website so we don't try to restore things to original condition. We build hot rods. We like to make them better than original. My point was that oil has improved a lot since 57 and so has paint. Use the best paint you can get. Forget about that old crap. Restorations are for old farts anyway
As for respect you gotta earn it. A kid who doesn't listen to good advise when he's on the wrong track don't get no respect. If you can't learn from the people with years of experience then don't bother to ask questions. You already know the answers you want. The right answers will just go over your head.
I don't know about Nebraska but I can get lacquer from the Napa store uptown. Try your local auto parts store.

I painted my Sons car about two years ago in laquer. Did some custom stuff that jacked the price some. Everything total was about 900 bux. Oh, I didn't mention we bought a windshield and a hood from a salvage yard included in that price.
OK so we don't respect each other. I can live with that. If I buy lacquer I only use it for touch-ups so a pint is usually enough It costs about $35 to $50 depending on the color. It's easier for an ametuer to use than enamel because it dries really fast so you don't get as many runs and it can be wet sanded and rubbed out for a nice shine. Lacquer thinner costs $12 a gallon. Napa can mix up almost any color and put it in a spray can. It costs about $12 for a 7.6 oz can and it goes a long way. I've been useing them for touch-ups lately and they give a good finish. 2 or 3 light coats work better than one heavy coat.
I won a 57 Chevy 4 dr ht in a raffle a few years ago. It was a beautiful shiny black. It had a new set of crager SS mags and a Grant GT wood steering wheel. It had a 400 small block chevy engine in it and 4 speed transmission. otherwise it was all stock. It was a fun car and I used it for a daily driver for two years before I sold it.
I was wondering if you know the difference between a 4 dr hardtop and a 4 dr sedan? A lot of people don't. They think anything that's not a convertible is a hardtop. A hardtop has no doorposts and no window frames on the doors.

and its not safer for you to spray , just as deadly as the rest , just because it doesnt use isocyanates doesnt mean its a good thing.
The paint products being designed today have pretty low VOC levels, but OSHA still wants the levels lower. Its also why they developed HVLP guns too. to help with better transfer from gun to vehicle !

I could get a couple lbs. from the print shop I usta' work @. I know that stuff iz @ least 25 yrs. old. Never bought new as long as I ken' remember.
