If you were using DTL16 that was for their lacquer
product, and yes you can still get it but it also depends on your location , because of the paint laws.
I think the new Base coat/Clear coat products are more forgiving as I have painted about every kind out there.
The base is easy to spray as it doesnt go on shiny , thats what the clear is for , and also for protection , and sealing off the base. If you get a run it sand it a tad and buff it( just make sure you have enough clear on it so you dont sand through ) . It makes it alot easier as if you went through the metallic layer in a lacquer or enamel job you were re painting it .
Oh and just a thought : I have seen where guys have thier polished aluminum Clear powder coated and works for a LONG time , might check your area and see if someone powder coats parts .
