    Por-15

I have a 69 Mustang coupe that I'm working on.It had a vinyl top on it.Took that off and found plenty-o-rust.Also discovered that I can't buy repro coupe skins....ugh!If I sandblasted both sides of the skin and applied POR-15 on both sides would it hold?I know this is probably a stupid question but thought about trying it and letting the car sit outside to see if it would rust again.Otherwise I will just have to cut and patch.

Study the info on the Por 15 site, there's a couple other steps before applying the Por 15.... Should work if you use their system, as long as there is any metal left at all.

well by the time you blast it like dave said there may not be any thing left been there done that and if so with a blaster you can over work the metal and warp it all to hell if you never done it.if you re skin it you well end up with a better job in the long run

This is going to sound weird,....

DON"T blast it !,.... just wire brush the surface and apply the POR 15,... from what the guy's at there booth said, It needs the rust to convert. Are you going to replace the vinyl top ?

If your going to paint the roof instead,... don't use POR-15 at all,..... just find a roof and start with the original weld and solder joints. But don't forget to tack a lot of bracing in the body first,... just like if you were going to chop a car.

    good luck.

you don't need to swap roofs! but check I think the por 15 needs a top coat for uv protection. blast the roof then do good old fashioned body work, prep and paint. I did one on a buick back in high school. we used filler for the pits, came out well.

Oh boy do I hear your plight. I recently re-did the roof on a 66 Corvair Limo that had a vinyl roof.

I ended up purchasing a huge pile of patch panels cut from a donor car as well as fabbing a new 3 foot center section rolled out of 18 gauge. lots of work, but well worth the effort and the only way to do it right. someone out there is sure to have a donor car for you as well.

you can buy a skin just like a skin for a door it would not to be hard to do in the long run you will end up with a much better job . i did this stuff for many years and steel will not move in heat from the sun . were i seen this happen the pors stuff is good for rusty stuff under side frame floor etc . i am not sold on it for the out side of the car used it on the out side of a S 10 and a round van hinges. i did not think it held up any better then ppg DP 40 for rust work and i did not think much of DP line for this work.... .if your going to remove the vinyl top and keep it off i have sanded them clean with 40 to 80 with a soft pad then da up to 120 clean all pits out with a wire wheel and scrap them out with a awl or spot blast at very low psi then cover with dur glass or mar glass . i would not cover the pits with any thing other then fiber glass then when work out top coat the roof with with a etch primers like etch lock or a two part primer filler done many this way. but theres one or two really bad ones i would of put a new skin on if i could get a new one .so if bad i would skin it

if you can get the roof to bare metal, applying a couple coats of a good epoxy primer will work . when epoxy primer is applied you can set the car in a lake and the roof wont rust.

    good product.
and it needs to be rusty to work.
i want to use it on my 27 chevy body.
i am going to flash rust the new panels so i can just spray the whole thing.
