from the sounds of it, if your not looking for perfection, and are kinda new at this your probably better off not stripping it down,, might save you some grief to not get that involved in painting your car. if it's in decent shape just fix the damaged areas, and prime what you have to.. then scuff the rest down, and tape it up and spray it..
