Nobody said this was going to be easy but when everyone says to sand to bare metal, which I plan to do, does that mean literally all former primers gone and only bright steel remaining or can there be spots of old primer showing as long as the base coat is gone? I don't want to cut corners but I don't want to be stupid either.

 Thanks and Regards

Normally you can leave some primer without problems. What are you stripping? How do you intend to sand it? "JayToo"

I'm stripping a pearl base. I'm thinking after a lot of talk that maybe I don't need to go through all this. This is not a show car but something I need to have gratification in when finished. There's areas that need some minor tending to but nothing drastic. Thanks for the help hotrod.

Jay1, The reason I asked what you were stripping was to see if it was a rusty car from the twenties, or something newer. If it's a pearl job, then the paint couldn't be older than the sixties.

I wouldn't worry about leaving some well-sanded paint, as long as you use a catalyzed primer over it.

Just remember that if you see any signs of peeling, blistering, or cracking, take it all off in those areas, or it may cause the new paint to fail.

from the sounds of it, if your not looking for perfection, and are kinda new at this your probably better off not stripping it down,, might save you some grief to not get that involved in painting your car. if it's in decent shape just fix the damaged areas, and prime what you have to.. then scuff the rest down, and tape it up and spray it..
good luck to you.CHOP IT UP!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info. Perfection would be desired if this was a show car. It's nice but I want to enjoy driving it. I'm sanding and prepping. Have 6 months of crappy weather coming up so there's no hurry. Good thing too! Ran into a pretty rough spot.
