Things I'm learning about yellow paint---Arggh

I have had an education in the last week concerning yellow paint. Back in the 70's and 80's, I painted a lot of cars, some of every colour. I have had experience with "transparent" paints, but at that time the worst colour of all was the metallic copper colours. It was virtually impossible to lay down a uniform paint job without first spraying a white coat to cover everything a uniform colour before spraying any copper colour. I don't remember any particular problems with yellow paints, concerning "hiding" and "transparency". Centari by Dupont was my favourite paint----fast foreward 20 years----I decided that when the roadster pickup was finished, I would spray it in base/clear, 2003 G.M. "slingshot yellow", a Corvette and SSR colour. Two days ago I began making serious enquiries at the local PPG and R&M paint dealers.----Now get this---that colour is $675 a gallon, just for the base. Then add on the clear---then add on the reducer---then add on a gallon of white----yes, this paint is an extreme low hiding, same as the old metallic coppers.---We're talking $940 plus tax for material alone----if a gallon will be enough. I have been looking at other yellows today, and looking at the possibility of using an acrilique enamel instead of a base/clear, as that is a bit cheaper---but even then, pretty well all the yellows now are "low hiding", and require a base coat of sealer to get colour uniformity.----Knock me dead. I used to paint cars for $200 and pay $95 for enough paint and reducer and hardner to do a full size car. I think the $500 I had budgeted for my paint job is gone with the wind.

    Brian,

Welcome to the wonderful world of today's automotive paints. I dropped about $900 for S&W 96 Corvette competition yellow, their Glamour clearcoat and all of the assorted reducers and hardeners. I'm sure SprayTech will chime in, but a gallon base (even in yellow) should be more than enough. When I bought a gallon of S&W yellow, the paint store thought I was crazy, and so did my painter buddy back in Omaha.

I've found with yellow in BC/CC a white seal coat is essential to get uniform coverage. I generally figure about $1,000 in materials to paint, clear, color sand, and buff a car. Prices on paint and materials have really gone crazy in recent years. But I can only imagine what the paint companies have to spend to keep the EPA and OSHA from locking the doors!!!

Check on Martin Senour, Napa sells it, if you have Napa, look through there book, they have acrylic enamel single stage paints in the front usally, that are not production car colors, there are a lot of yellows. Don't take this offensive as I'm seriouse, but JD yellow is 6 bucks a quart and is almost like a daytona yellow when you buy the rustolum brand as there colors are not perfect match to JD colors, I have a quart of JD green and it is more of a hunter green than the true JD green. The Martin senour purple I'm getting is single stage acrylic enamel and is 125 a gallon.

I painted my Camaro stock car with JD yellow synthetic enamel ($32/gallon) with SW universal solvent #3 & overall gloss hardener for acrylic enamel. Shined like a new penny, and still looks great over a year later.

I was thinking of doing the "Z" yellow. It's original color is Daytona Yellow so the new GM yellow would be kewl. I worry about dust though. The bright yellow would show every little spec. I don't have the best facility for spraying paint. Actually it's the same place i'm buildin' the car. I remember from the ol' custom van paintin' days. You could tack off a light color, thinkin' you had it perfectly clean and the first shot of clear spes would show up. ARGH.

Will $250 even cover it with Omni, counting the reducers and clear??? I've used some of their MBC, not real bad stuff. Not exactly House of Kolor stuff, but not priced like it either!!!! The materials for my Ranchero from house of color will be right at $2200.00!!! But hey, I'm worth it !!!!!! JMO, of course!!!!

no, i really dont think 250 would be enough, i shouldnt have put that number down. when i painted our 98 malibu after putting a rear clip on it , i used omni and i think it was a little under 400 with everything. base/clear it is that pewter color or whatever. that was 2 yrs ago.

The last paint I sprayed was a 4-color Imron job on a Super Gas Camaro. That was 20 years ago and I think the tab was right at $500. for materials.

I am finding now that since Most all paint manufacturers are making all lead free toners to mix the colors , they are now harder to get coverage.

With whatever paint company you use see if they make a tintable sealer, tint it yellow and coverage will be alot easier.

My buddy painted his Nova in a large two car garage. Then left and closed the door.

Unaware his cat was in the garage... It jumped on the hood walked up to the roof, LAID DOWN!!. Decided that it sucked, got up(leaving a ton of hair) walked down off the trunk. HAHAHAHAHA!
