I painted a Corvette one time in an old garage at a house that I was renting in Barrie, when I first came here. I had worked all winter on a 31 Desoto coupe I was building at the time. It was cold in the garage so I insulated the ceiling between the joists with big batts of 6" thick fiberglass insulation. That spring when I painted the Corvette, a nice polyurethane metallic, I painted it with the big garage door open. Like your buddy, as soon as I was done spraying, I shut the door (it was one of those vertical tip up style doors). I thought I felt a bit of resistance as I shut the door, but never thought any more about it. Next day, when I opened the door to inspect my job, there was a 24" x 48" batt of fiberglass insulation laying (you guessed it) fuzzy side down across the trunk and rear of the roof. Oh Boy!!!

look at the 1973 vw beetle yellow... it is a true yellow and will cost you the same as most 'normal' colors do. it is a great yellow and covers well!

Im gonna paint my 442 that new Cadillac maroon. dose anyone know how much that cost I have asked about the Cadillac white diamond and they said $79.00 a pint i believe but im not shure. also i have seen this new 05 mustang that is maroon with black racing stripes and that was a cool color, dose any one know if that is a stock color?

If its the maroon I' am thinking of on the new cads, its a Tri -Stage, which will cost you about double, same with the diamond white pearl, its Tri-Stage to.

yeah spraytech you are right it is a tri-stage paint.

I'm using NAPA Crossfire acrylic enamal, (Martin Senoir), not sure if thats good or bad,but is easily accessible for me, I picked a softer yellow much like the new V.W. bugs, I have only painted my 32 grill shell so far,but the results where way beyond my expectations, i first shot it with crossfire epoxy sealer,220'd it then did the small amount of bondo work, then I shot it with crossfire lacquer primer & blocked it, then I shot 4 coats of the acrylic enamal with hardner,then shot 2 coats with crossfire clear with catalyst adding some of the color in the first coat, I'm here to tell ya the thing came out like glass,best paint job I ever did, coverage was excellent, only thing I had a complaint about was dry time and a heat lamp helped that out. I bought 6 qt's.of color, a galllon of reducer, & a qt. of hardner and although I can't find the invoice I know it was under $250, I also redid an old gas pump with the same product & technique except in an off white and had the same results, I don't know how it's gonna hold up but right now it looks very very nice, My smart alec best buddy upon not being able to find a flaw in the grill shell and upon finding out i shot acrylic say's "the only way to go nowdays is basecoat ,clearcoat" my answer to him was,hey acrylic was the only thing anybody used 20 years ago and it held up just fine back then and besides I'm buildin an everyday driver not a show car... I just hope this stuff doesn't make a monkey outa me...

It pays to shop around.---The yellow paint that I originally wanted was quoted to me by PPG and by R&M at $675 a gallon for the base colour alone. Needless to say, I have been doing a lot of calling around and searching for alternatives. Today, I went to the Sikkens dealer in town, and bought 1 gallon of base colour, (2003 G.M. slingshot yellow) one gallon of reducer, one gallon of clear, one quart of activator, 2 quarts of high hiding white,and 1 gallon of "wash-down prep" (pre-paint solvent cleaner) for $599.30 Their line of paint is "Lesonal", and it is used by some of the major dealerships in town. So, even with the evil 15% tax that us poor Canadian suckers have to pay on every damn thing we buy, my total cost is only $689.19 FOR THE ENTIRE PAINT JOB!!!!

53 Chevy----what is Ia---is that Iowa? You live close enough to come on over on the weekend and help me get the prep work finished. I'll even buy the beer. I want to see that sucker yellow too. The only trouble with this neat on-line car club we belong to is the distances between members houses. Seriously, I got to drive a couple hundred miles this weekend to see my ancient mom and take her out for a mothers day lunch, and on Sunday I have both boys coming over for the big spring yard clean-up. Once thats over, I start pulling the roadster pickup apart for the final paint bash. Hope to have it painted and reassembled by end of June.

C9x, The site you list has a "Candy Apple Red". Is that an acrylic? In my state of ignorance about paint I thought any "candy apple" was a special multi-coat application. Since I like acrylic anyway, what can you tell me about that $35/gallon paint, have you used it? That looks interesting to me, although most of the labor is of course in the prep. I have only done this once before on a '47 Ford conv. I did actually beat out, lead, file, grind and sand the whole body but had it painted with Caddy Aztec Red (orange) back in 1954 by a professional shop for $100 plus cost of materials, but I don't even know what kind of paint the Aztec Red was. Anyway any comments on the $35/gallon paint would be helpful to me since I am amazed by current prices!
On the other hand, gas was $0.249/gallon when I got the $100 paint job so it would seem there has been a little inflation since then!

I looked at that candy Apple Red color and it looks like the old Ford solid Candy Apple Red from the 60's -80's

Yes a true candy apple red is a tri stage.

Spray

Thanks Spray Tech, I went back and read further on the site and they do recommend a follow up with their clear coat so I guess they have a solid acrylic with clearcoat for a two-coat paint, but maybe I can shop around locally and find somebody to spray it for me. I touched base with the local Maaco folks today and they refused to treat a gelcoat fiberglass body and surprisingly there is no Scheib shop in Richmond anymore (there used to be), the closest is in Norfolk or Alexandria, but maybe a local painter will moonlight for me if I prep the 'glass. What is so different about the gelcoat? I would think with a 220 grit rubdown and maybe a little primer filler (of the right type) it should be ready to go, but maybe there are special procedures to paint gelcoat?
