    Does a 440

     



    have very much power? im buying one for $400 and wanted to know if i need to do anything to it to make the tires burn?

    That is a general question. But I will try to help you out.
    Depending on what year it is and what vehical you are installing it in. If it is a pre 1973 and in a light weight car then if properly tuned then should be no problem. Just remember that if it is a pre 1973 then the heads DO NOT have hardend valve seats and some will need to installed or after market heads installed. The unleaded gas you buy now will "eat" the valve seats and let gas/ exhaust back into the head. Also what tranny you using and rear end gears used as well. In genaral you should have no problem smoking the rubber off.

    A 440 is a powerful engine in stock form if there pre '73 ( any 440 after that year is still worth it, just takes tuning and a few aftermarket parts ). If you want a real performer, get a 6 pack for that 440.

    The 440 is coming out of a 1969 Newport (BIG BOAT) and going into a Dodge Custom 150 Truck (short Box) im sure the rear end is a 3.55 its an 81 truck but!!! i changed the front end into a 77 because i liked the circle head lights and the fact that the 81 front end was hanging on by the fender bolts lol

    I got both the trucks given to me the 81 from my mechanic it came stock with a / 6 i think.. but the 1977 i got came with a 360 its siezed from sitting but i need to get some Diesel Fuel to soak the pistons im thinking of getting a dart or duster to put it in im not sure.

    ok so i dont have to worry about the heads then? If theres enough horses to burn the tires off without tuning i dont want to have to change heads if i dont have to.

    I dont know if youve seen the empisode of trucks that hes testing out the (Ford truck a guy made called the Grabber)

    I want my tires to burn and truck to go like that


    Another Question: Ive got a 4 speed manual with Bo-Low (came off of a 318) and i want to know if it will bolt up to the 440?

    I have a 440 in my 66 charger and my buddy has one in his 68 Coronet R/T amd YES it is fast and powerful.

    Like everyone before me has stated, if it is post 73 then you'll need to do a few extra upgrades since that's the time emissions control came into effect and reeked havic on the big and powerful engines of yor. Being a 69 casting you are good to go.

    If you are thinking about putting the 440 into a vehical that had a slant 6 or a small block then you will have to change the motor mounts and tranny cross member. Also the "K" member will have to be changed as well. This is not a hard process. If putting it into a vehical that had a slant 6 in it, then keep the springs and shocks for that vehical in the car. The weight from the 440 will give you a good "stance" on it. Alot of MOPAR racers used slant 6 shocks and springs for that look. Go to this link for help in this....

    They have helped me in the past with everything you need for the swap.
    Also, the small block MOPAR had a different bolt up pattern for the bell housing concerning the tranny you mentioned. The slant 6 had its own pattern. the 318 thru 360 had its own. 383 thru 440 had its own and the 426 hemi had its own.
    So the small block tranny will NOT bolt up to a big block. I would try to keep the trnny/engine combo together on the 440 you have. Bolt it in as one complete set.

    i dont think trucks have k members do they? all ive seen is upper and lower control arms... i really dont know about the 440 now i want a standard tranny with it theres nothing like shifting those gears with nothing but smoke from the tires lol

    But if i have to ill keep it auto i guess there just as good

    what is a 727? is it s tranny? or tourque converter? I was thinking if i could find a 440 bell housing for the 4 speed i think id be doing alright. I think

    Streets=Smart@ss. Seriously though, he is right on the Plane. However, the referance you want is a Chrysler Auto Transmission. Found behind most Chrysler V8s at one time or another. Also found behind AMC Eagles/Hornets/Concords. These auto trannies never seem to die-as long as you keep them cool. Should be able to find one in a junkyard behind a 318/360 in good shape. I reccomend looking in Police issue Diplomats as they tend to be built a bit beefier.

    The "K" member was for cars.
    I hope the link I gave helped.
    The 727 was standard issue for automatics in trucks and MOPAR cars as well. MOPAR did come out with a 904 tranny also. These were used in the slant 6's and 318 with a light weight body cars. Like the Signet, small early Darts. Just a light weight tranny for light use commuter cars. The bell housing is identical but the tranny pan is shaped different. keeping the tranny cool is a big help for these. Especially in a truck.

    ive got an auto trans behind my 360 thats siezed. how would i find out what it was? Take the numbers off the tranny?

    I believe the HP rating in the larger cars were 350...375 in the R/T and GTX and Optioned in the RR...It doesn't take much to wake it up either....plenty of torque to smoke any tire you put on...
