Im pretty new to chop tops. What would be an inset in the hood? I prefer the windshield still remain vertical. I'd like the car to look aggressive and I think a vertical windshield helps with that. I like the lead sled look of mercury customs. The rear end on my car is nice and fat for it too with simple lines. I'll put a pic of the back in incase you feel like playing with that. Matt

    READ THIS 1st >>> !!!! " I Personally have never chopped a top .... " <<<< ....YET <<
but, from what I have learned here at CHR from a few members and talking to people and watching it being accomplished...

To keep from having the glass ground down ( made smaller $$$$) , you lean the windshield back ( give it rake ) "as madgrinder suggested" and remove a section in the roof.

If you want to keep the glass at the same angle it is now you will need to " grind it to fit the new frame you will be building" you will be adding to the roof if you do it this way.

And the inset I'm talking about
i've only seen done a few times , if you will look at some of the newer cars they have the wipers and windshields inset under the hood . so you would be lowering the front into the firewall and leaning the rear glass towards the front. "

and don't forget you still need to match the windows and doors on the sides ....

I had some links to some really good pixs of the jobs being done "but can't find 'em now maybe someone here can help us out with a few good links ...

Guys if any thing doesn't sound right please correct me ...

Talking OK you asked for it .....

here is raking the the windows front and back ... w/a 2-3" lowering " somewhere around there anyway "
you'd have to take about 3 or 4 inches out of the roof
    ( mesurements are all guess'temastions )
tell me what ya' think and what ya'd change ....

Problem I see is that the windshield is so tall that it would have to be leaned back so far and cut into the roof a ton. Why would I need to add to the roof if I keep the angle and grind the glass?

If I kept the same angle I'd be forced to inset or find very small windshield wipers.

Yea you just posted the raked windshield. I dont know if I like that...it makes it look like an old lincoln limo, something like Kennedy drove in. I want brute, mean in your face hot rod, but sleek so I can cruise around town. I'm trying to find pics of what I want but am cutting up short. Best thing I can think of is Merc Customs with a fat grill and body but a small roof. Matt

Almost looks like you could take a few more inches off the top too. I want it so it has been noticeable chopped. The car by itself looks very bubbly because its useful as a taxi that way so people can get in and out easy. Ha..it almost looks like you just made it more "normal" I really want the mean aggressive look that Larry M almost had in the 3rd post.

Its too bad I dont have new pics for you. I had dual exhaust installed along with limo tint on the back windows. Its illegal for the front driver/passanger side and windshield to have anything on them in NJ.

By the way I really appreciate what you're doing. Just let me know if this is boring you or if Im asking too much. I just expected someone to take it and do whatever and spit it back at me. I do appreciate you even asking me what I'm going for. Thanks. Matt

I have done a rough check on the car. I'm not going to be doing this really that soon but I want to start thinking about it. HA...yea I know its not a merc. From the top of my head to the ceiling is about 4-5 inches. So I figure if I get a new sofa seat that can actually recline then a 4" chop would be nice. I don't want her on the ground so much. The checkers were built with suspensions into the sky so they didnt hit curbs while picking up people. I'm just going to drop it a few inches to make it look somewhat nicer. It's not going to be a full out lead sled. No wheel covers in the back either.
It's a big car though. I don't know how I wouldn't fit. Here's a pic from a couple years ago while buying the car. You can't even see the top and also look at the angle at which I'm sitting. Pretty vertical. I could either get a new sofa seat the leans back further, find a sofa seat that doesnt ride as high above the floor, or both.

just making sure your thinking .....
same drop on the bottom but, 4-5 " chop with your door pillers leaned forward and all the glass is cut down

and about the "adding to the roof " if you step back and look you'll see what I'm saying , if you shorten the glass ( front and rear , there isn't enough roof to fill the space, some thing has to lean or be added somewhere . very rarly are you going to get away with out it .....

oh ya ! fixed your front tag
and everyone is asleep right now but if I've said anything thats not correct "hopefully " someone will correct me tomorrow.....

If you ask me. That looks pretty damn cool. With my exhaust I bet that would look pretty tough driving down the road especially with my limo tint. How does the forward leaning pillars work out? Does that compensate so I wouldn't need to add to the top front of the roof? Would I then just grind the glass on the sides? They'd still be able to roll down and function correctly right? Wouldn't the forward lean move the back window forward though thus I'd just be adding to the rear instead of the front? I guess it works better that way to make it even smoother in the rear. Nice job though. If I can chop it that much I'd gladly make my car look like that. Only problem is figuring out how to drop it 2-3 inches to get at that wicked stance. Matt

here the view from the side with about 4 or 5 "s off the top , the back glass laid down & cut ,and the top of the back fenders and trunk lid shaved and lowered .... w/a 3 " drop in back and 2 in front on the suspension.

I still like the idea of weldin' the back doors shut and puttin' BIG meats uder the back. Maybe even take about 1/3 of the back door out .... i.e. shorten the whole thing some. That would give ya' some donor sheet metal for the top too. I TEND TO GET CARRIED AWAY..... Sorry. He HE
