Here's what I'm using to work the dents out.....the new guy, MP&C, who has the 65 Fairlane build thread suggested using pvc pipe fittings as dollies when working out these dents. They give support around the dented area but don't cause the extra stretching that can occur when hammering on a steel dolly. It's a slow and tedious process but I figure the smoother I can get it the less filler I'll have to use.

The big shiny area is starting to get pretty flat. :3dSMILE:

It actually feels smoother than it looks in this picture. I could probably get away with skim-coating this with filler but I'm gonna try to smooth it out some more first. :)

WOW Randy, that's looking great! I agree with Dave too - gotta be a 100% improvement, you've been busy!
And even though I'm not working a project at the moment, you'll be my inspiration to tackle something that I would've shyed away from.. So thanks for sharing!

Thats cool Randy, I`ve used wooden blocks shaped to fit sometimes but never thought of pvc, thanks for the tip.:toocool: and yours is turning out great....:)
[QUOTE=406Rich;459054] Thanks, Rich! MP&C starts posting on this thread at post #13 and gives a lot of great info & tips http://www.clubhotrod.com/shop-talk/...explained.html
It's worth a look.:)
Your work is getting tight Randy , I could flight you to the windy City for some garage time LOL:)
I think the shrinking disc would be the wonders for this panel . I wish I had one to run it over on

Yeah, Bobby, I'm intrigued. I just watched this video about a shrinking disk... Wolfes Metal Fabrication Shrinking Disc demonstration - YouTube Thanks!
When we went to the Reno swap meet about 6 years ago we watched them beat the crap out of a fender and pull the dents back out with a shrinking disk, just amazing how quick he was with it.
Does it matter how big the shrinking disc is? I've seen 4" & 9" available. I only have a 4" angle grinder....will the 4" disc be big enough for what it needs to do on my lid?
Thanks...
Randy I want to say it was a four inch disc, but that was long ago, its a memory thing now...
During my internet 'wanders' I saw where someone had made a shrinking disc out of common pieces of steel. While not as glamorous as the $50 version, will work well. There are a bunch of threads if you Google.
And for once Randy, trying to SAVE you $$$ instead of the usual
As Dave said home made will work , you are really just creating heat thru friction , so a home made one would be fine . Dave I like that idea myself . The stainless is just harder and won't wear as bad is all I would think .
Bobby - after I 'penned' my response to Randy, I removed a worn out solid edge 7" saw blade from my tile saw and may just see if I can make that into a shrinking disc. There is still a tiny bit diamond grit on the edge, but it may come loose with some heat and may anneal the disc enough to be dished a little bit. Low on my list of things to do though :-/
I have a 4" hole saw and some 16 gauge steel. Could I just cut a disc, drill a 5/8" hole to fit my angle grinder the dimple it a bit and make it a little concave?
That angle grinder will be too fast - mine runs at 11,000 rpm - and will end up burning. The hole saw might come apart at the weld. I would be using my big Hitachi grinder/polisher which runs 600-3600 rpm and probably at some speed around 2000 or where ever it 'felt right'.
Hey Dave, just for clarification, I was only going to use the hole saw to cut out a 4" disc, not as part of the shrinker. you know, sorta like eating the donut hole instead of the donut...:D
One of the sites suggested taking the shrinking disc up to 6000rpm for faster heating of the area.
I have a Makita 5" disc sander that runs 4500rpm. If I can figure out a way to make a disc for that it might work well. Will let you know....
Great work on the deck lid! How's everything else going for you?
Hey Randy I think I am right behind you a few cars on the coaster !! Work is going to implement a AWS which is a alternative work schedule , would mean working a 3 day week at 12 hours a day . The next week a 4 day at 10 hour days . Talk about screwing up a pattern , they say it gives us off a total of 76 more days a year . That only means the company doesn't have to pay overtime anymore . :(
Also means family time gets stepped on when you have to work every other week end . Also down side is a lot of toy cash slips away .
We are all working on how the brakes will work on this ride thru the trials . :)
Bobby, I'm thinking that even with your new work schedule you'll still be ahead of me on progress.;) I haven't had a chance to get out to the garage for a few days but I'm still contemplating how I'm gonna make a shrinking disc from something I have laying around. We'll see what happens....:3dSMILE:
Randy I haven't hit the car in a few weeks . :( Spring time chores caught up with me .
We may be running side by side on these :) . I did get the Centari to cut in pre assembly painting though .
While there I was parked in the street inside looking at all the eye candy and some one drove by smashing the drivers mirror on my truck . . One more job I have to get done , sure is hard to see thru duct tape  .

Ask and you shall receive...
I could have used that Rich !!!! Might have made them little cars hard to see though .
Its always like that just under the bar .
There is a certain element that uses it a lot, but the price they pay for it they might as well chrome it...
Don't let the redneck youngsters see that stuff! It'll be every where! Happy Easter to you guys by the way!
Well I am all up for seeing some update on this lid Randy ! I am ready mentally for some horse work to knock it out and get to the next one .
After the 31 which may work also , but the design in your 37 pedals wants to be copied by me for mine .
Hey Bobby, I wish I had some updates on the lid but I don't. I've been consumed with work & taxes!:CRY: Hopefully I'll make some headway soon! Will keep you posted.
Of course you're welcome to copy my pedal design whenever you're ready. My biggest concern is routing the exhaust around the power booster, etc.
We know heat and brake lines are not good , Think about running them down the center on each side of the drive shaft .
I still have the original X-member with modifications in the center for the trans. The pedals/MC assembly also bolts to the X-member, not the outside frame rail so there is no room to run the exhaust down the center until I get past the MC/power booster. By then it wouldn't be a problem. If I chose to go with manual disc brakes, I don't think clearance would be a problem but I do live in LA, which means power brakes become more important! I might have to use some kind of heat shield on the power booster or maybe I can push the power booster back past the center/side brace and use a pushrod extender to gain some clearance in that tight area. :HMMM:
I'm obviously a ways away from hanging exhaust but it's good to think about these things along the way.

Thats true looking ahead can eliminate a redo sometimes but not all the time . Wish I was on the 37 right now , we could both be looking at and maybe figuring a answer out .
Yeah that would work better , ever think about living near the Windy City ?? :)
Of course I live in the Windy Country .
