It is an early 80 350 with a 400 trans. I can't take it back to the shop as it was built in CA and I am in SC.

Check the easy things first - valve covers (including breathers, pcv connections, external pcv cannisters, etc), intake china wall, sending unit, etc. New oil is very difficult to see, especially on a dark painted surface, and it will run down and follow the pan lip to the back, making it look like a rear seal.
