You may feel and hear a growl, if you hold your hand on shifter. I know that sounds vague. But I was always pretty good at feeling axle bearing or trans bearings going out, especially in the race car. Transmission will usually telegraph that rough feeling thru shifter. If you feel an unusual vibration in the handle, it's probably time to take a look, (before you are picking it's guts up and putting them in a basket). Also shifting may be more difficult, if bearings are getting really slopy.
