That sounds a good idea Ken, should be a nice detail even if its takes a while to do, I did these a while ago and also extended them 12", that took long enough !!! I might sell them on now and get a pair like you have.

Interesting attention to the bones. Seems like an overly complicated part bolted to an assembly that finds beauty in simplicity.
I admire your fabrication skill, thought and attention to detail but i have an area under my bench where things i have made accumulate dust because they didn't pass the simplicity test. I find thta overly complicated is when vanity overrides the engineer in us, thta little guy sitting on your shoulder is whispering in your ear. Hard not to listen to him. Whom do you think Doane Spenser listened to?
What one person sees as "complicated" another sees as "perfection". :D:D

A 'T' project? Those things are the next evolution up from having a tiller for steering! How do you handle that or is it on the wrong side too? The 't' is a study of simplicity, Henry would not use 4 bolts if he could get by with three, the packing crates from parts suppliers became the floor boards, a forged steel clevis was replaced with a bent piece of wire for the ignition advance and a farmer was the consultant for expert mechanical shop repairs!

I like it - just wish I had enough tools to do some of the "complications" that folks like Ken and Steve can with SS as well as common steel.

This thing with the lightning holes came about when I was figuring out what I was going to do for the infra structure inside the frame rails to strengthen the frame up. I already made up my mind that any lightning hole I made I wanted some big radius' on them, not just welding in the tubing and putting a small radius from the weld. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's a lot of work and I think it makes a part look real nice. I just want some big ones on this car. I have been playing with the idea of making some tooling I could slip inside of the different size material I'm using but it would take so may dies it would take forever. I have dimple dies but again they wouldn't work on say a piece of 2 X 3, you could get one side dimpled but not the other. Then I thought of just taking some 1/8" sheet metal and braking one side 90 degrees. With the pieces bent like that I could dimple both pieces then weld them together and I would have a piece of 2 X 3 with big radiuses. I gave up on that when I had flash backs on welding the stainless frame together, so that was out. That's how I came up with the idea of just machining the whole thing, drill an oversize hole and slip the machined piece in and weld around the hole and it's done.

Ken i wouldn't want to do this again :eek: i had to machine up some of the tubes in mine, it seemed to take forever to get them finished :(

Too much time spent on fit, finish, and detail would be like having too much horsepower.....I'm sure it could never happen to me!!!!!!

Have you ever given a thought to hitting the show circuit when this project is done? You'll notice I said done, not completed.:rolleyes: I'll bet there would be a big demand for a all S/S chasis + more car with the craftsmanship that yours displays.:) Just a crazy thought.;)

Jack - I don't think I could do the car show circuit. When I go to a car event, and I'm there more than a few hours I'm ready to go. I couldn't spend 3 or 4 days at event. Probably my ADHD kicking in :LOL:
Here is what I'm thinking on the 'bones. That's a .250 radius at the front. The last hole at the end works out to only have a 1/8" I.D so the radius has to decrees. I thought it would look neat to go down that far. It gets tricky because it is going from a rectangle to a round. That transition really creates a lot of problems, the radius has to change as the diameter changes.

I was working on my front end the other day, bolting things on to mock up the ride height of the front end. I got to the leaf spring and put it on, here is this nice stainless front end and this black ugly spring in the middle. I did some research and I decided to make my own springs out of stainless. I bought a piece of 17 4 stainless 4" wide and 12' long by 1/4". I took it over and had it sheared into 1 3/4" for the front spring and 2 1/4"for the rear. This has the properties very close to spring steel after heat treating. So tomorrow I'm heading over to the guy that makes my springs and he will bend them up so I can drop them off at the heat treater, then polish them.
Before I decided to do this I E mailed Eaton spring in Michigan, I think, and asked them if they would make them for me. There response was, no one can make springs out of stainless :eek:. So then I called my spring guy and he told me he had made some for the front end of a Indian motorcycle a few years back without any trouble. He gave me the phone number of a friend of his in northern Ca. who also makes springs. He told me that he makes coil springs out of stainless all the time. He gave me the heat treating numbers to shoot for. So we will see what happens.

That will really set all the other stainless frame members off nicely Ken. I've never heard anyone making their own springs before, so this is cool to see happen on your build.

I see where this is going...by next winter we'll be learning how how a 1 piece 12cyl stainless steel engine block with ardun heads can be made with a bastard file and a recycled napkin holder!
You mean plain, old ordinary chromeplated-beyond-my-means springs won't match well against the stainless? Who could ever tell? I mean, anybody that dares to look will have permanent eye damage from the reflection not to mention spacial disorientation from all the mirroring that will be going on. They won't even know you got springs on it!

The lunar rover tires were "9 inches (23 cm) wide tire made of zinc coated woven 0.033 inches (0.84 mm) diameter steel strands attached to the rim and discs of formed aluminum." (quote from wikipedia) I'm sure Ken could do the same thing out of stainless steel. Burn-outs would be even cooler with sparks instead of smoke.
Steve - I agree, it looked terrible against the other parts. I think I have miss led you on the springs. I'm just the gofer in this, I got the material to take to the spring shop so he can put the arch in them. Then I will take them to the heat treater. I talked to the spring guy this morning and ask if I could take photo's of the process so I can post it here he said sure. So next Tuesday he will do his part.

Dave - Absolutely, if he would of said, we have tried that before and couldn't get it to work or we couldn't find the right material. That was the wrong thing to tell me, I'm so hard headed, (sometimes it's not a good thing).
Don - I am seriously considering making the wheels out of stainless, along with the hubs, caliper mounts, calipers, and rotor hats.

ojh - Thanks, I just don't like the difference in looks with chrome next to the stainless, I think it needs to be one or the other. If it's shinny enough people won't see any mistakes :LOL:
