The car was a mildly modified stocker with a late model Toyota 4 cylinder, so not quite as radical as some Metropolitans out there.
Doug has been pretty successful in commercial property management so can afford to commission this kind of rig. Those Deusenberg engines don't go cheap. He traded a very nice '40 Ford coupe plus "some" (undisclosed) cash for it as you see it. My guess would be he had to throw something in the five figures of boot in the trade.

It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.
