Thanks Ken, I've been looking at all of the suggestions.
When I started regularly making the trip from here to Illinois several years ago there were 3 places I hated going thru, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, and Kansas City. I found a way to bypass Albuquerque completely, I use the Kilpatrick Turnpike around OKC, but so far haven't found a way around KC.
The only other option is following 40 thru to St Louis and then 270 North. I used to go that way but between going thru St Louis and the Illinois drivers, I'll put up with KC

When I was going to Ohio before my step father passed away I hated going through St Louis so I'd hang a right at 270, south of St Louis, to 255 and then I-70 east bypassing St Louis.
You could take I-40 east from OK City to Memphis to I-55 and then at Sikeston, Mo stay on I-55 or I-57 depending on where you are headed in Illinois.
All in all I'd rather bypass St Louis than try and go around KC and I doubt if it's that much farther.Ken Thomas

I'm headed to the NW part of Illinois Ken. I usually catch I 80 in Des Moines. I just noticed and am wondering about catching I 135N at Wichita and then US 81 up to I 80.
Don't know if 81 is 2 or 4 lane, but it would get me around KC.......wonder what Omaha is like to get thru

Looks interesting and worth exploring.
When I was in high school we made 3 trips to Florida and didn't go the same way twice. My step dad was like that and that was before the interstate system.
Can't tell you about Omaha as I've only been there once and that on a hop out of March Air Force base. Took the choo-choo to Dayton, Ohio and it cost me all of $13, but that was in 64.Ken Thomas

This is a pretty good explanation - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_81#NebraskaRoger

Thanks Roger, good info. I was doing a bit of research while you were posting. From what I can tell US 81 appears to be 4 lane all the way to I 80 and 70-75 MPH thru Kansas and 65 MPH in Nebraska.
The trip's still a few months off, but right now I'm pretty sure I'll be giving it a try.....at least once anyway.

It's worth a shot. I'm pretty sure that the road around Omaha will bypass everything, and I wouldn't expect traffic to be bad.Roger

Been through Omaha quite a few times and it never seems that bad to me.Seth

One gadget that I did not see mentioned was that CD player that sat on your front seat with the adapter that plugged into the cassette player. I thought I was styling cruising around in my '77 Ford pickup while listening to CD's.
I really doubt if the drivers in KC are any worse than what we have in Florida. I-4 between Tampa and Orlando is considered the most dangerous interstate in the country, and with good reason. It seems like 1/3 of the people out there are on there phone and barely paying attention to the traffic around them.Steve

I seem to have turned into a Luddite, or so I am sometimes told. My memories date back to the mid forties, and from the mid fifties on, I followed every advancement in vehicle electronic entertainment with avid zeal - until about ten years ago, then I just quit, period. I removed the radio antenna from my truck, so the radio doesn't pick up much of anything, and I never turn it on anyway. I removed my CB, GMRS, and two meter sets, and seldom even think about them any longer; dunno why, it's just what it is. Never had a need for GPS, although it is a fascinating device, a map or two, if I can find them, serves me well, otherwise, I just sort of "find" my way naturally. I might be going bats.????

Well I drove the little V8 Ram 50 back and took the US 81 route. It adds about 68 miles to the trip but was worth I've been tied up in KC rush hour traffic in a couple of times that would actually would make the US 81 trip quicker. All in all it was worth it to bypass KC.
