Canon 50d------------just doesn't do videos
Thanks will have a look, usually you're on point and a trusted resource. Do not want or need video, have a camera for that purpose.
Pepi, I have two that I use regularly, a Canon EOS 60D with an 80-200 telephoto that is very powerful if you want other than "automatic" point & shoot; and a SONY CyberShot pocket camera that's great for day to day use, point & shoot with 5X optical zoom and 12.2MegaPixel capability. If you're not wanting to do your own settings on aperture/speed, and plan to basically use the automatic features you don't need anything like the Canon EOS 50D or 60D. Look at the pocket cameras that have got some phenomenal zooms now, and they will do everything you need. Sony CyberShot, Canon PowerShot, etc, etc.
all my photos are done with a sony cybershot pocket camera.
easy to use and download - no problems with size and resolution and I don't have to be a rocket scientist to use it.
Got a point and shoot, agree the digital zoom on them are great. Closely looking at the DSLRs, had a Canon AE1 years ago good little camera.
If you're looking at DSLR's check out the Canon EOS 70D package from Costco, if you're a member. It's a great camera, and NIKON has a comparable model, too. I like the Canon because my hands are big, and it's a better fit for me. http://www.costco.com/Canon-EOS-70D-...100129567.html
I have a 3200 Nikon package and love it. Will do more than my capabilities any time. I used 35mm for a long time and missed the ability to really set up different exposure rates, time frames and such. Costco or Best Buy in a package with 2 different lenses and bag. Mine with the big memory has ability to video for over 2 hours or about a bazillion pictures.
I've always been partial to Nikon, used their SLR's and love their DSLR's. I have the D90, that I take everywhere. I have a pretty good selection of lenses up to 1000 zoom. Wife got me the D810 for Christmas, only just scratched the surface on using that one. The D90 is a great everyday camera, trouble free, durable and takes great pictures.
Pepi,
I'd say that if you're jumping into the DSLR arena your biggest question is whether to go the less expensive mirror mechanism with the smaller image sensor, or whether you want to jump up to the full frame DSLR with the large image sensor. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and I tend toward the smaller image sensor providing a bit less distortion at the corners, but folks who do mostly landscape and protrait (people) photography (professionals) lean toward the full frame sensors. Full frame has its own lens family, so its a choice that really needs to be made before you jump into the pond. Some basics to explain the differences between them - Full-frame digital SLR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and http://digital-photography-school.co...me-still-best/
We have a FUJIFILM X-S1 great for everything except panoramic shots.
.
My Canon has a 28-135 mm lens
I decided to go with Canon while on a trip out west where we took about 7000+ pics with an Olypic? point and shoot----after buying an extra battery on the road $$$$$$$$ and then an inverter so we could charge the two batteries, added a third battery, smoked the inverter-------decided that a good method of choosing a new camera was to obserbe what the orientals ( being PC ) were using------at Yellowstone Old Faithful (one place where there was lots of people/cameras) they all had Canon------------got a refurbished ( so they sid) eos 50d off e bay-was brand new, zero shutter clicks---because 60 and 70d were out and this was left over earlier model---------2 differences-chip in this one is COMPACT flash and doesn't do video-------
No need here for the full frame format, or print large photos . My pictures are displayed via computer or posted online, so mid range DSLR is where the primary intreats lies. I do want sharp crisp photos that is a must, the ability to shoot low light and timed exposures, a reason for the DSLR quest.
Looked over Costco's prices I see no note worthy advantage in the pricing compared to other photography resources. On some camera models they are the same within pennies of the manufactures quotes.
I thank all for the input always good to read what folks like and the reasons for that.
If your desires/needs/wants can be accomadated with a single lens-you can save hundreds$$$$$$$$ over a package with 2 or 3 lens group-------
This morning I sent one of my boys the Costo listing of all digital cameras, and pointed out the Sony a5100 package, and right beside it the Canon SL1 which both have deep discounts, bringing them to $699 w/ two lenses and free shipping. I think that's pretty far below the manufacturer's pricing on both of those, but I may be wrong... I noticed that the final price is not shown until you click the item, then the sale price pops in.
You might want to check out ebay, some really good deals there.
Ken, I'm likely overly cautious but I wouldn't buy a high end camera off of eBay. Too many gray market deals out there, buying from overseas and you may find that the unit you buy has no warranty coverage in the USA. Amazon's probably OK, but not evilBay for me, but to each his own.
I can fully understand as it's buyer beware. I bought a used Rebel XTi for around $250 with 2 lens, filters, 3 batteries and a charger. It takes excellent pictures and I'm very happy with it. It also came with 4 memory cards and a wide angle lens.
Mine came from a company on EBay--don't remember who but if I can find the transaction ill post it
Sorry, didn't understand you were talking the previously owned market. If you're not shopping new then the warranty/support issues are not nearly as important. There are some things that I feel comfortable buying on eBay, but not bigger ticket items that are complex mechanically or electronically, but that's just me.
If your need fits their bundle packages their discounts on the Nikon packages are pretty good, too. My son is looking at the Nikon D7100, but he already has a good DX telephoto, so the package with two lenses doesn't really fit for him. He may end up going to Nikon direct and looking at their refurbished D7100 for a $100 discount on the body only, still carrying full warranty, and then looking for a fixed length lens for every day use (new baby coming).
I'll drop out of this one now....
I'm using a Canon G1X
it just has the right feel to me from a guy who carried a camera bag with Nikon F models with 5 lens / flash /grey card for years. TriX at 320. Kodachrome was my favorite song
It is a point and shoot if you like or make all the adjustments you can think of.
it has a lot of features like most newer cameras and a amazing LiPo rechargeable battery and the flip screen.
I use it at work for inspecting where I can't get my head in.
great camera
hank
Nikon won, played with it tonight, think it is a winner. Ambient light, camera auto adjusted the parameters, the Bud machine was a 30sec exposure, not bad I say.

I've been shooting my first DSLR, a Nikon D50 with Nikon 70-300 Zoom lens for about 9 years. If it went kaflooey, I'd replace it with another Nikon. It's cool being able to take just the chip into Walmart and make copies of any photo, any size. Before this camera, I shot a Minolta SRT101 that I bought in 1972. I do not miss taking film to the processors and waiting for it. With the Nikon, I can see what I shot within seconds. I'm just amazed at technology.
.
Amen Tech! Saw in the last day or so that Canon's new EOS 5D, which is full frame camera (chip the size of 35mm film), will have a version that creates 50MP pictures! Talk about resolution, but also think about the storage of those babies if you shot in RAW mode! Gotta be something in the order of 100-150MB per frame.
Pepi, which Nikon did you get? My son just picked up the Nikon D7100 with a fixed 35mm lens for now, since he already had a DX zoom from his older Nikon.
I agree completely, being able to pull a chip and see the pictures shot minutes before is great technology. Did you know Kodak still sells 35 mm film a bit hard to believe.
70-300 zoom that is a lot of glass, this camera came with a 16-55.. Looking hard at one of these 35 or 50 fast 2.8 fixed lens, telephoto nothing above 200 and quite possibly 135 max, see what the needs are.
D50 is a solid camera for sure, other then cars what else do you photograph? I like all things mechanical, and mother nature.
Pepi I used a Nikon D50 like tech for years, bought it used off Ebay, without an issue. Recently bought a new Nikon body D5200(off ebay camera dealer with 1 year warrauntee for 400.00 and it uses all the D50 lens) for use and speed with my bigger lens, but still use the D50 for posting on line as it is between 2.5-5 mega bytes per photo vs. 24mgb for the D5200. The D50 is a solid old workhorse! If it's just for posting, no need for any new one at high end prices when any Nikon DLSR will do just great. Lots of friends have canon DSLR's and love them too!
I love the 28-135mm lens for car shows and races--------
Jerry I loved my 18-200 until it got dropped on my wife's cruise. We replaced it with an 18-270 tammeron lens that I like, but the old D50 body can't process the light limitations or focal points very fast so I fiound it was time to step up to a newer camera body, but this new camera has a much steeper learning curve to really use it for what it's capable for, so now I'm halfway thru D5200's for dummies! :) At home I still use the 35-80mm lens that came on our old Nikon SLR and it works quite well with the D50 body.
I guess it is, but it's what I like to shoot. I can pull a person's face right up close without their nose looking ginormous.
I like to shoot things that others might walk by, like Levis pants buttons up close, old stumps or twisted trees that have been hit by lightning, the faces of the Presidents off currency and I love catching people before they know I shooting them, you know, less the fake smile.
