Car shows that hand out trophys

I went to a local car show on Saturday,19th. It was a "judged" show. I never go to a show with the hopes of winning a trophy. I go to see my friends and talk cars.
I am relaying this story because I was parked next to an older couple who after they parked ,proceeded to sit out all the trophys their car has ever won around the front of the car. They also spent a good 2 hours cleaning and polishing. After having a chat with them , I was told by another friend who knew them and he told me if they don't win a trophy they get all pissed off ...............WHATTTT!!!
When my grandson and I were on our way to the show and we were heading out of town, there was a guy walking his dog along the side of the road. As we drove by he stuck his hand up in the air and gave us a thumbs up. I told my grandson that gesture means more to me than any trophy ever could.

I think I met them at a Pottstown cruise two years ago. There are always people who are like that. Thankfully, they are the minority at most shows.

I had been in a club who did an annual show that was judged. One year a club from the neighboring town came to our show as we had attended theirs and they wanted to return the courtesy. One of their members kept moving from row to row... Our President said no more, turns out they kept moving because a "better" car (more competition) would enter that same class and that would make the mouth breather scared that he wouldn't get a trophy.

When it was all said and done, he did not get a trophy, because his car wasn't in the same league as those who did win and, he threw a tantrum and some very nasty language was used and his own club tossed him out from our show and banned him as a member from the club and they couldn't apologize enough to us!

Since then I look down on the trophy hunters..

Over the years I've saved one car show trophy---and that was a 1st place for a custom scooter.... There's always a bunch of little kids around when the trophies are handed out, if I get one, first kid I see with the biggest smile is gonna go home with a trophy.... Means the world to them!

I do the same thing that Dave does, if we get an award, some nearby kid gets it....I have to be careful because the show organizers seem to not think it is cool for some little kid to end up with their award. I used to hand out drag racing trophies to the neighborhood kids for the winner of their bicycle races. Had parents come to me and ask if their kid stole the trophy! However, if the award has pictures of Ben Franklin, I tend to put those in my pocket.

There are suble differences between Cruise nites(usuall a weekly event) and outdoor seasonal Car Shows which only happen once annually or at most certain week of the month ---First Thursday-----3rd Saturday, etc---


And then , there are the ISCA (????) annual (usually winter) events at major convention centers and of course the Detroit (Riddler) and LA or Oakland Roadster shows-----------


Plus ----------some racing/performance awards at some major/historical events--------


I have been a Judge, trophy presenter, and contestant-----------------the trophies that are still around here mean something special to me and most of the time it wasn't just winning, but some fond memories of the event----like starting up the Monza Pro stocker at the farthest indoor corner of McCormick Place in Chicago and driving it out thru all the lowered airbag turds and driving a mile or so up Lake Shore Drive to where we were able to get the trailer(January/Feb? in 10 below zero snowie conditions----
Robin locking the truck with her persue? inside(yep my keys in the ign) while blocking several lanes in downtown Springfield-------etc, etc, etc


Of course one of the major shows that I remember is the final championship show that was out in Omaha(IIRC) that I didn't get the car to because I was snowed out of Chicago on my flight (remember, former airline pilot) in Omaha--------questions from other competitors---Hey Jerry, Wheres the Monza?????????


You guys just should be proud of the fact that these people are still interested in cars and aren't showing some imported crapwagon with a fartcan exhaust------

When my kid raced Mini sprints @ Pike county speedway the feature winner was required to give the trophy to a kid in the stands. Which I thought was great ! Several years ago when the kid was racing 1/4 midgets we put his car in the local community car show. A guy I know had his nice custom 39 ? chevy sedan entered. Turned out him and the kid where in the same special interest class. My kid got first and he got second. That S.O.B. went stormin off cussing and threw the trophy in the trash. What really gets me is that guy didn't do one ounce of work on his car.

Here in our town we have a local hamburger joint which puts on a friday night get together in their large parking lot. Several years ago, they started charging $5 to get in. This entrance fee could also be used to purchase food at their place. They also provide a live band or a DJ outside plus a police presence. I am amazed that a few car owners stopped attending. They spend $$$ on their cars but can't part with the $5 to get in...... it doesn't make sense.

yeah, I imagine that evey trophy show has a few of those - - - - back in the late 70s we had a car club in the East Texas Big Thicket, called Big Thicket Street Rods (duh) and we always had the members "make" the various trophies - - - - some of the trophies were well thought out, crafty and one of a kind - - - - people would come to our shows just to try and win a "homemade trophy" - - - fun fun fun

I used to show my own stuff, and won my share... but 50 years of involvement has changed my outlook.

I usually tell my customers to go enjoy the show and talking to fellow gearheads. If you get a trophy, then it is just "gravy". I tell them that if they want proof of whether people like their project... listen to what they say... and watch for them to point, or get out their camera! That is the "proof" that you did good!

As far as the trophies themselves... I favor the ones chosen by the public... not by judges who are either counting rock chips, or "helping out their buddies".

I never realized how bad trophy hunters can piss ya off until I started putting on the car show in my home town. I never realized how pissy people will get because they didn't win a trophy, and how big of fits they will throw. I had guys flat out tell me they wouldn't show up because they didn't stand a chance. I wanted so badly to say spend more money or make your ride unique. This particular guy had a stock restored 72 C10. It was nice, but there are a crap ton of them around and many nice examples. I'm no trophy hunter, if I get one sweet, if not, it isn't going to change my mind me or persuade me not to build something.

This is my favorite part about my Corvette. I wish I had a dollar for every picture taken of that car so I could build a better faster one. haha But, this car also gets a lot of bad comments and I have my fun with said ass hats. I had an old guy ready to box at a show this year because he was so mad I ruined a Corvette. I just kept egging him on. I just ask questions like, How can I ruin a car destined for the crusher, or How can I ruin something that was crap when new, things like that. After the shit storm I asked where his car or truck was and he had none there. I replied with case closed. Hehe
