If you do find out why it stuck, could you let everybody know please Charlie?
We all drive cars 'different' from the norm; and anything that has the potential for tragedy is of interest to us all.
If it's something that we can ensure won't happen on our own rides; then perhaps some good can come out of a terrible event.

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
