Yep that's what keeps us here, and family. The politics are obsurd as the people that get elected. But most of you also know at least someone from here who isn't a reflection of current politics. Ronald Regan comes to mind.
It is one of the few states where you can ride a motorcycle or drive with the top down every month of the year without getting wet, where you can go 2 hours one direction and be skiing, or two hours another and be surfing or swimming in the Pacific. Most places have little to no humidity, yet water is still redily available. The state as a whole is very divided politically, as can be seen by who gets elected Govenor. One year it will be a Republican, and the next a Democrat, which is a seesaw effect that causes many stalemates as far as education and other state regulated policy comes from. Up until about 4-6 years ago, we offered some of the cheapest and most prestigious college educations in the nation.
Unfortunately we have a lot of two faced Politicians running and serving here. Feinstein comes to mind for gun laws. She did a public stent on gun reform, turning in your firearms to be melted down. She turned in her smith and wesson 5 shot 38 in front of the cameras showing how she was leading the way. Immediately after the camera crew left she ordered her body guard to get her gun back. I have spoken with officers who were there that day to witness that little tidbit.
But our screwy gun laws are a foothold for anti gun politicians to push foward their aganda, which will spread nation wide unless people speak out. The NRA is being credited for the recent UN arms treaty not being drafted and accepted as policy. Unfortunately, they just tabled the issue for 6 months. Hum.............What will be different 6 months from now?
It's scary how many policies the current white house has effected don't go into effect until well into Obama's second term. I admit I voted for him, and I admit I feel misled, and angry for the political decisions he does and takes credit for. I will not vote for him again. Romny is not the answer, but he is the only chance for a different figure head for the next four years. Then it will be the same battle again!

Around 61 or 62 California decided that smog was a problem that had to go so they appointed a smog commission and jumped in with both feet, literally. What ensued was a mish-mash of regulations and some not so effective devices, blew up a good 292 Y block in a 57 Ford with that garbage. Fast forward to 2012 and California still has smog and will always have smog because of their geographic location and diesel engines amongst other things. They can't blame industry anymore since they ran them all out, so who's left?
Like a fellow I worked with at Douglas in the 60's said "As long as there is a smog commission we'll have smog".

I just don't see that many states following California's lead anymore! Yeah, it used to be that way but not anymore. Around here most politicians watch what California does and be sure to do nothing anything like it!!!! With California's crime, economic chaos, and political bs why would anyone follow their lead any longer???

As for all the Chamber of Commerce dribble about the diversity and the weather, I guess we all have to make choices on what our priorities are; is surfing in the morning and skiing in the afternoon more important to a person then the safety and security of his family? Or the countless state regulations and laws used to keep their thumb on top of a business more important then the ability to just go out on your own and conduct a business without a lot of intervention??

Not a bit of California's anti-gun bs laws have spread back this way, nor will it in the foreseeable future! Because of that, the few with the assault weapons are limited to the para-military wanna-be's and other such posers. It would seem to me that the high population centers draw the larges number of wacko's (politicians and others) and because of that I choose to avoid those places like the plague! Guess I just can't see where any Post Card type of climate or lifestyle is worth sacrificing my own personal security or would make me want to live in an area that requires me to sacrifice so many of my personal freedom and choices!!!!!

Today is the centenial for Milton Friedman's birth. Oh how we could use his wisdom today. Here's some irony for you; he schooled and taught at the University of Chicago..................as did our current President. Talk about a disconnect!

For fun, watch this short vid where in a matter of just over two minutes he shoots down one of the lefts most sacred touch stones. Notice that Donahue does exactly what we are all familiar with when challenging the left to back up their beliefs with outcomes rather than intentions.............................he doesn't answer the question. A nice tribute today in the Wall Street Journal that enumerates a number of the principles that Friedman so correctly espoused............again, so often ignored by our political class. Stephen Moore: The Man Who Saved Capitalism - WSJ.com

Alan I would vote for that. I think being part of the system instead of above and beyond the system would make politicians accountable for their actions. My fear of having them invest in their own retirement would be greasing thier own investments per say! All in all a great idea! It would definately stifle thier B.S.

Bob that was brilliant. He cuts through the assumptions and quotes facts. Something few people want to hear these days.

One of the greatest minds ever - I'm privileged to have studied his economic strategies and sorely wish the men and women we send to our state and federal governments were half as wise as Milton Friedman was. Instead we have career politicians - their only agenda from day one is to get reelected for life (or in the case of our sorry excuse for the POTUS - two terms)...

Yep - I'm with Friedman - show me the place that doesn't have greed and I'll show you a cemetery..

Thanks for the link - He was a truly great American!

Probably the most hilarious (and not in a ha ha way) line in that blather is that the likes of Paul Krugman "....trying to inject some morality back into capitalism." Their "morality" is (though their stated intentions deny it) to concentrate power in the hands of their elitist pals which in turn, (they believe) will insulate them from the negative outcomes. Again, Freidman's question goes unanswered........"Where has it ever worked that way?" (the leftist way that is, the concentration of power and it's abuses is history).

Just one example of the leftist false belief.............we don't have enough regulation. Or......those righties are anti regulation. The rule of law IS regulation, and the right respects the law. The left? Ah, only when it suits their purposes. As in the selective prosecutions of this current administration when it coms to the Justice Department. No.........there has not been ANY real curtailment of regulation. The Federal Register where laws/rules are recorded is at an all time volume, and rising in size at an all time rapid rate. Yet our society isn't progressing, it's declining. In terms of actual outcomes, not intentions, we have more people relying on Government for subsistance as the Government has gotten more involved in "managing equality". It's the same outcome that autocratic governments have produced for all of mankind..........the eliteists that make up the government, and their toadies, whether they be corporate, academic, or other, have a relatively cushy gig, while the producers continue to be distilled to an ever reducing lowest common denominator. The job of the left will be complete when the whole of any society is in poverty together (well, except for the self annointed elites). That's been repeated through history...................again, any actual examples of the leftist uptopia please?
