Congrats on getting it done. When I get to that point, I have been told that all I will need is to take my title and proof of insurance to the dmv and they will give me my plate.

i told the nice lady at the dmv what i had (she called me honey)
title for the vehicle the engine/tranny came out of
    the 2 documents mentioned above
reciepts for every nut n bolt
    insurance
and she told me i was much better prepared than 90% of people that try to do what i am doing.
i asked about a permit so i can legally drive it from my home to the wiegh station and then to the dmv.
she said i can pick one up anytime
they are free and good for 8 hours.

    it broke down
there went the $175 i had saved up for titling the 27
so i went and did some more side jobs

Good luck with that, Pastor. You might pull it off if you have a clear Kansas title and they don't know that you have any later model (less than 30 years old) powertrain components or that it's been "modified". Safest way in Kansas is to register it as an antique before you start building anything different, or you can be tagged as a current year "ASEV" (assembled specialty equipment vehicle), sales taxed on every nut, bolt & washer and property taxed as a new car based on your total costs. In this end of the state it is very, very difficult to get around the DMV.

Billy, sounds like Colorado's process is the same as Kansas, and you're running the gauntlet per the rules. It'll be a good feeling to get that registration for the first time. Hope your tax hit is not too big. Will Colorado register you as a 1927 Chevy or do they do the "assembled vehicle" game too?

81 (year of engine /tranny title)

There is a sales tax on all cars If you build the car the reciepts show what it cost you and thats what they tax you on.

Okay,Charlie..So,the cheaper you can build it,the better off you are,,as long as the DMV/whoever believe the story..So the tax is,what, depending on the state you live in..about 5-10% maybe?? Plus, the on road costs,,insurance, etc?? Could get expensive..

    Mine breaks down like this:
    State of Kansas 6. 30 %
    Johnson County 0. 50 %
    Johnson Co. Law Enforcement 0. 25 %
    Johnson Co. Stormwater 0. 10 %
    Johnson Co. Public Safety 0. 25 %
    Johnson Co. Research Triangle 0. 125 %
    City of Gardner 1. 00 %
    City of Gardner Park & Pool 0. 50 %
Total State and Local Sales Tax 9. 025 %

Each County in Kansas establishes their adds to sales tax, and then each municipality in that county can establish their adds, too. Sales tax is a one time hit, when an item is bought or built and registered for the first time.
Property tax is collected each year, and on vehicles depreciates year by year. Our 2012 Equinox gets tagged for about $400, but my old 1990 F150 is about $50 in personal property tax. Then we pay the "use" fees for licensing, which is around $17.50 per tag. My registration hit in October for four vehicles was about $1185.00 - that's personal property tax and registration, with no sales tax hit.
