Okay,Charlie..So,the cheaper you can build it,the better off you are,,as long as the DMV/whoever believe the story..So the tax is,what, depending on the state you live in..about 5-10% maybe?? Plus, the on road costs,,insurance, etc?? Could get expensive..

    Mine breaks down like this:
    State of Kansas 6. 30 %
    Johnson County 0. 50 %
    Johnson Co. Law Enforcement 0. 25 %
    Johnson Co. Stormwater 0. 10 %
    Johnson Co. Public Safety 0. 25 %
    Johnson Co. Research Triangle 0. 125 %
    City of Gardner 1. 00 %
    City of Gardner Park & Pool 0. 50 %
Total State and Local Sales Tax 9. 025 %

Each County in Kansas establishes their adds to sales tax, and then each municipality in that county can establish their adds, too. Sales tax is a one time hit, when an item is bought or built and registered for the first time.
Property tax is collected each year, and on vehicles depreciates year by year. Our 2012 Equinox gets tagged for about $400, but my old 1990 F150 is about $50 in personal property tax. Then we pay the "use" fees for licensing, which is around $17.50 per tag. My registration hit in October for four vehicles was about $1185.00 - that's personal property tax and registration, with no sales tax hit.

It's a Chevrolet, which they advertise as a "Crossover SUV" 2012 Chevy Equinox | Fuel-Efficient Crossover SUV | Chevrolet To me that means an SUV body on a car platform, ours with AWD for snowy country roads.
