It's horrible. Some States issue welfare recipients debit cards that work anywhere regular bank debit cards are accepted. The idea was to not stigmatize food stamp users and let them go through the checkout lines like people who actually earn money and have real debit cards. But they were finding people were using these cards to go to casinos, cruise ships, and amusement parks ! Some people were even trading the cards for illegal drugs and alcohol.
I just heard another farce thought up by some pinhead who works for the Florida Unemployment Dept. They spent $ 14,000.00 to buy red capes to issue to people who were out of work so they could feel like a Super Hero and have more self esteem ! Not saying anything about people who are out of work, just the idiots who dream up these stupid programs.
Don't get me started !
Don
it sure dose all that lobster and no butter
My ex-wife qualifies for and gets food stamps. She lives in Wisconsin and vacationed for 2 weeks this winter in Phoenix. Air fare, hotel, rental car, restaurant meals, entertainment? Go figure.....
We need a better government!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can see why your blood boils. Deposit on cans! Geez!
I miss lobster.
It doesn't upset very many apparently..................the number of "beggar thy neighbor" programs keeps expanding. As does the power of those who control them.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't think any able bodied person should get food stamps. Stamps should be reserved only for those unable to do physical work. All others should work for what they get. It could be neighborhood cleanup or any number of jobs that would improve the community. They might not be very fun jobs, but wouldn't that be incentive to get out & find a better job?
The current welfare system is breeding a culture of entitlement. Not only the people that are actually on welfare but also those looking at the welfare system and saying to themselves, Why should I work so hard while "they" (welfare recipients) are getting something for nothing? Kind of brings society as a whole down a notch.
When I was a kid I was taught, work hard, be honest & treat others as you would have them treat you. It seems these days it's How little can I do to get by and who, or what system, can I take advantage of to make my life easier.
I absolutely don't think we should let ANYONE go hungry, that's not my point. But, I don't think the current system is helping people improve themselves. It's rewarding people for doing nothing. That's a drain on society in the form of taxes, and it's a disservice to the recipients as it rewards them for being less than they could be.
Climbing down now & getting back to work.
This is no different than any other "freebie" Gooberment program that
starts off with the majority thinking it's a pretty good one but then after the
abuse and corruption sets in, it's "Life as Usual" - the working man pays
taxes that takes care of the non-worker/non-taxpayer. S.O.S. nothing more
I'll probably get hammered on this too but food stamps (if you qualify) should be distributed as commodities. It's glaringly obvious that the current system doesn't do anything for the truly needy. Years ago (and I still believe it today) we should have used the empty school houses (another stupid government move) vacated buy the bussing program and used them to house the needy: ie."poor houses." When I was a kid, I watched welfare people line up to get cans of food that were delivered in semi trucks by the state. It was humiliating for those people but at the same time it encouraged them to stay off the public dole. Every decent citizen doesn't want anyone to starve but
handing out my money so someone can live or at least eat better than me is infurating. We need responsibility in government and SOON. If this administration continues through 2012 we are all sunk!
If this gets nasty I'm sure Mr Mustang will lock it down, therefore my only comment is get out and vote.
We have here a thing called a "Bridge Card" suposed to bridge the gape ?? like X number of dollars to use till your back on your feet.... About all I've seen and heard is it keep people off there feet and on there BUTTS. One guy here won the state lotery for over 1 million... He had a card before that NOW he still uses it and brags about it He bought a new home new car and put the rest in investments so he has nothing in the bank HE qulifies:eek::eek: Our Government SUCKS. They know this is going on yet they do nothing about it. Others use the Bridge card for vacations the government say they can't control where they are used "theam parks out of state ARE YOU kidding me Banks can control where you use there debit cards but the Statte can't figure out how to This is one Topic I get real P Oed about but then you'd never know it
Abuse of well-intentioned government programs is really nothing new, and certainly nothing that just started with this administration. I do consider it somewhat ironic that the receipt is from a store in Wisconsin, I figured with their most recent "bust the unions" fiasco they had all of their public programs well in hand!!!!!!
Welfare fraud, and fraud within all the government programs has been rampant for many years. If you think the reciept for the lobster and steaks is outrageous, how much money do you suppose is wasted in administering and maintianing the system?
As Ken said, the answer is in the hands of the voters. Don't expect the current batch of politicians from either party to do a dang thing about the system that was put together under their "watchful eyes" over the last three or 4 decades.... This isn't anything new, it's just another sign of "business as usual" in government. Just the way things have been for the last 30 or more years since the people of this country allowed the government to run things instead of being our duly appointed representatives. Want to point the finger of blame??? Try complacency and apathy on the part of the general public........
The problem around here with the welfare system is simple, welfare payments are higher then the minimun wage earned, so why work when you can stay home, look after your kids, instead of costly daycare and transportation, something has to change!
Food stamps and other welfare should be administered on a local level by volunteers and run by churches. If you have ever watched a church group operate, they are extrememly sympathetic to those in need but very harsh in handling those trying to buck the system......they would clean the system up in a heartbeat.
Just my opinion, but food stamps are for making sure kids get a healthy meal every day and a mom who is caring for a baby. Like I have read on here and believe myself, any adult can help clean up a park or street so the at they at least attempt to 'work' for the guvernment hand out.
I do have two comments.
When I was a young pup, my dad who was an electrician ended up changing unions. He and his boss went from top seniority to bottom in one day. They needed to look out for the good of the longer term, but the short term sure hurt. Dad worked just enough (1 day in two weeks back then) to not qualify for unemployment. Mom tried to get food stamps or any other type of program to feed young growing and hungry children, but could not get on any program. None were available. It was tough times. We learned to do without, conserve, and thrive on what we grew in the land. I remember these times well and maybe they helped form me to be a better person. nahh.
My second thought was on the more humorous side.... Gee... at least someone can purchase the lobsters and the porterhouses in the market. I sure can't.
jerome
Im happy my great state finally passed a bill requiring all welfare users to pay for and pass a drug test before being issued any benefits. I sure hope it cleans the system up some! Wic is a way better program by making the user only buy healthy products instead of just giving free money.
Dave---after your comment about wisconsin----I think you better go back and review the facts --this store was in Mi not Wi---
Yup, Mi, not Wisconsin. Just read the Menominee part.
The problem as I see it is that there are people voting who have no idea how the country is supposed to work, how the original framers set it up to work. You should have to pass an extensive test before being allowed to vote and be required to explain how your vote would help the public good. We're putting dummies on the street with these programs such as No Child Left Behind who neither understand nor appreciate how the system could be improved. It's all part of the plan by big money to dumb down the electorate so they won't make waves.
Big Government will get bigger and bigger until it capsizes itself. There will come a day when the number of people sucking from the public trough will exceed the number of people filling the public trough.
Keep your powder dry.
In George Washington's time, you had to be a land owner before you could vote. I think re-instating that little formality would be a great idea. You'd have to be an American land owner though otherwise we'd all be speaking Chinese.
I'm with you. To get state assistance there should be a work for food program. Even most of the women would qualify. There are plenty of state owned buildings in just about every town. Open up some of that property, make a daycare for the women with children. Have a rotating daycare work schedule. Some of the women work cleaning state properties inside and out and rotate with some in the daycare as babysitters couple days a week. Pass mandatory drug testing, Work a minumum number of hours weekly...etc,etc. I never got anything for free, even getting screwed from Social Security now that I'm old enough. The people now a days just don't get it!
Richard,
I appreciate your perspective, and I know it comes with some level of experience. If you look at the percentage of the population in Maricopa County (Phoenix and surrounding areas) that derive their monthly income from some form of government (city/muni, county, or federal) it is a surprising number that is closer to 50% than it is to 25% - already approaching your feeding trough analogy. I don't know the number today, but about eight years back it was 38% and rising, as I recall.
Roger, nationally it's 48% for the US.
The Supreme Court already struck down property ownership and passing a test as a right to vote better then 40 years ago... would take a constitutional amendment to change that, and that sure as heck will never happen the way the country is now!!!!
A strange concept, but maybe we should start voting in to office people with common sense that are not tilted radically to one side or the other. All the different minorities and groups demand that a politician "sell out" to them before he can even get elected, then once in office his vote is bought and paid for by special interest group with the most power, influence, and money.... Seems our senators and representatives no longer give a hoot about the voters who put them there and are only looking out for what's best for them and the groups they now represent.
No idea what the answer is, but "business and politics as usual" just isn't going to resolve the issues that they have created. Governement is beyond too big, it's become like a multi-headed monster, when you cut one head off two more grow back and look for more of our individual rights and choices to take away!!!!! Where in the heck in the constitution does it say that some self-appointed group of do-gooders in DC have the right to decide what's best for me??? The rights we were all guaranteed are slowly but methodically being taken away from us. Then, we are all convinced to buy into the media frenzy of taking sides and spend our time blaming the "other guys" for all the problems in this country and absolutely nothing gets done in Washington to remedy the problems we face!!!
As a start, my idea would be to bring ALL OUR TROOPS home, put them to work defending our own borders, and quit fighting wars, wasting lives and trillions of dollars annually trying to help out countries that don't want us there or want our help.
Whenever you rob Peter to pay Paul, you will always get Paul's support. Welfare in theory is good. Welfare in actual practice is a method of buying votes and gaining influence......just like amnesty for the illegals, just like free health care, just like all the give aways.
For the doubters (not meaning you Roger) it looks like my memory was a little off........it's closer to 45%..............Obstacle to Deficit Cutting: A Nation on Entitlements - WSJ.com
IF we have food assistance, medical assistance, unemployment assistance, government help with buses, job training assistance, housing allowances, paid school lunches, help with utility bills, etc WHERE THE HELL IS THE GOVERNMENT PLAN TO HELP WITH GASOLINE, CELL PHONES, IPODS, AND CLOTHING???? The pols are missing out here.....buy some votes with free designer jeans. Give 'em the latest IPOD....courtesy of Uncle Sam. This would help the younger people get onto the Government teats and trap them into a life long dependency on the welfare state. Younger folks dont give a damn about health care and jobs......give 'em what they want.......
Found this!

Woops, the link is dead now.....It was a link to Fox news talking about this very Lobster Bill.
Guess the guy was arrested and charged with selling the stuff in the parking lot for quick cash.
Uncle Bob, thanks.....I forgot to ask about free sex....do you have a government plan for that?
not exactly the type of sex I had in mind
It's going to get worst by the day and in my opion(that's mine and no one elses) there's going to come a time where someone in the miltary will say the hell with the way out goverment is run and their will be a takeover and then we sure better keep out power dry and buy alot of bullets, because your going to need them to hold on to your homes and property.
I recently read that someone said the Government "safety net" programs have become hammocks. How true
having read the whole thread, you all have valid points,,and it sounds like you are talking about New Zealand,,and probably,a whole bunch of other English speaking countries too...It sucks...big time..And even worse,,you want to see our new prisons...Heated floors and built in wall mounted tvs..But,lets not get started on that one....
