No rescue places around here - not even an SPCA close by. I did manage to get a pretty decent picture of her under the porch and it sure looks like she has been licking the wound. I am amazed that there isn't any more blood on the white part of her leg so maybe it isn't as vital as I was afraid of. If she would only let me doctor her, I think that yeller spray stuff that we always used on horses and livestock might do the trick.

you can sneak some meds in her food . i've seen them lick a wound down to the bone . livestock will do the same thing and yep no blood. sounds silly but you may have to set on the ground with some treats. i'm 6'6 250 and strays wont come near me until i get down to their level. scooby snacks get'em every time

ps: I was thinking like shine. Sneak some meds into a treat. The vet should at least be able to fix you up with some pills.

Good idea,even try to get some tranquilizers into her food,so you can take her to the vet..She looks like she will stay around..Nice looking dog..

I know well about getting down to their eye level - - - - learned that working with foals in the pasture and round pen. The Med idea is great and my SIL also suggested that plus maybe a tranquilizer pill to sedate her but I'm waiting on a call from my Vet to see what he recommends and if this is feasible.

Appreciate ALL comments and suggestions - - oh, and mama dog does too.

Might be as simple as a foxtail. Those suckers will just keep getting deeper and deeper. Like was said a few posts up, drug her until she passes out, muzzle her and take her to a vet. She will chew on it until she chews her leg clean off.

How does she respond to your wife's voice? We had a border collie come up one summer and she stared at me from 50 yards away she would not come close. My wife talked to her and she went to her as if they were friends. She was covered in fox tails so we had her sheared. She eventually died from them getting into an organ.
I mentioned earlier about the doberman and pitbull fight. The dobie was very torn up and we had her stitched up and took her home. The vet did not think she would bother the wound so he did not put a cone on her neck. She tore the stitches out the first night and started licking the wound. It look grouse for three weeks while she self healed the wound. There is very little scaring to see. It is a very tough call that you have to make. I hope you can get her to a vet. If she is eating and drinking that is at least good thing.

UPDATE:
I haven't seen the dog in almost 3 days now but the last time I saw her she was carrying the leg and not putting "any" weight on it. I have been putting food out along with anti-biotics in a cheese ball but I'm afraid that another critter is getting the benefit of that lately. I blocked off her access underneath my rear deck and that probably caused her to move on and try to find another protected area to curl up in. The Vet said the best way to get her healed was to find someone with a humane trap, catch her and then haul her and the cage to a Vet, but I couldn't afford to do that. Wish I could have done more but her fear of almost anything severely limited my ability. Thanks again for everyone's concern, comments and advice.

Update: I just wanted to report that the stray dog, whose shoulder was so messed up and right leg was swollen the last time I saw her, came running thru the back yard this morning with a Rogue Weimeraner (sp) that I see about once a month. I truly figured that she was dead by now from the way she looked the last time I saw her.

Good News is that the injury on her shoulder is almost healed completely and there is no visible swelling. She still doesn't put any weight on the leg but she looked good and healthy and well fed. I managed to run to the icebox and drag out a couple of drum sticks and a sausage and quickly put them in her bowl. She devoured the scraps and split like before so I guess that taming her is out of the question. Sure was good to see that she was almost 100% and fat.

that is good news. at least you know she is still alive.

outstanding. she'll come around . dogs overcome the fear after a while. they can tell if you are a threat or not. you may have a best bud after all .

Well glad to hear that she is alright. I't's hard to get near them wild dogs, I have seen a few down here but they don't usally last long down here.
With heart worms and all down here, with out treatment they will start swelling up and have heart failure. We didn't have those problems out west in the Nevada desert.
Them differant climates sure throw some wrenches in the works, Hopefully she will make a full recovery.

From the way she's looking at the bottom of that dish, the food must not be all that bad either.

It should be interesting to see whether she develops some trust in you. Let us know from time to time.

By the way, Mello, have you been able to enjoy any of this wild weather we are having in our part of the world? Today my youngest brother (who lives in Itasca) was having a bottle or two with some of his buddies in Fort Worth while two tornadoes went by. One to the North of his house and one to the South.

His wife was home alone at the time.

He was not anticipating a cordial welcome when he got there.

BT, it is like we are in a glass bubble here in Leon County - - - - we watched severe storms with hail and tornadoes coming at us from the NW (DFW area) and they passed by about 14 miles north of our place, Praise the Lord. Supposed to be the same stuff this evening and then clear off and get better. Shine, has been lucky also being in the area he is in. I've been involved in a couple of twisters and don't want anymore of that s*** ! Once you hear that non-existing "Freight Train" you will never forget it ! Sure glad your Bro and Wiffy didn't suffer any harm or damages.
