Barb, it might seem like that to you until you sit down and put pencil to paper and figure out the actual cost. You've already taken the depreciation hit on this vehicle. Now, you're considering taking another huge hit on another vehicle, plus sales tax and tags, etc. If you're thinking buying a used vehicle, you may just be swapping one set of problems for another set. You cannot trust anyone to tell you the truth. Period.

Anything with wheels and tires is the worst possible investment you can make, unless of course, we're talking a classic that still has room to run when (if) the economy comes back. But if we're talking a daily driver, run what you have until it won't run any more is my best advice. All costs considered, that will be the cheapest route to owning a daily driver motor vehicle.

When I sold Toyotas, I would see people come in and trade for a new or newer car/truck and just dig themselves deeper and deeper into debt. It really made me ill, but of course there was nothing I could do about it. It was how I made my living. What I really wanted to do was stand up and yell at them "RUN FORREST, RUN!!.

I was just thinking what I would do if I were faced with your problem. I think I would type up a half-sheet of paper, so I could make two copies on a standard sheet and say something like this.....

    LOCAL MOM NEEDS HELP

    CLUTCH JOB, '89 ISUZU TROOPER 4X4 5-SPEED

PAYS CASH MONEY....Finder's fee paid to you if you locate a certified mechanic to do the job.

    PLEASE CALL BARBARA, 000-000-0000

Starting Monday morning, I would be placing these notices under the windshield wipers of all cars and trucks on the street surrounding dealerships. Do not step foot onto any dealership property, just work the vehicles that are parked on a public street. I wouldn't necessarily start at the Isuzu dealership, that might make some hard feelings for sure, but start with the other make of cars such as Chevrolet, Mazda, Dodge, Nissan, etc. Often, these mechanics run in cliques and unless I miss my guess, word will get back to a certified mechanic who has a shop at his home.

Just spend a couple of hours doing this on Monday morning and I suspect that by Monday evening, you will have found your hero. If not, pick another section of town and go again Tuesday morning.

Barb, I'm not known for my conventional thinking and this may seem somewhat unorthodox to you, but it's likely how I would do it if I were in your place.
