The short answer is resource contention. Your PC sends out a request and the server(s) (where CHR resides) is/are not able to respond within the timing parameters determined by your PC. Now you can increase those timing parameters, but I wouldn’t.

There are multiple variables that can impact this – most of which you cannot control as once a requests leaves your PC you really have no control on the route that the message takes to get to the server. Most often, the routers that control the flow across the Internet use an algorithm derived from a process called OSPS (Open Shortest Path First) to establish a “path” between your PC and the resource you are accessing. This path remains “intact” as long as you have an active session and there is no traffic that is prioritized higher than you on the Internet that needs to acquire bandwidth. Pretty fantastic really, to think our NZ friends enjoy the same response time as those of us in the States when accessing CHR.

The major difference between CHR and the really big “Server Farms” is size and number of big pipes that touch the Internet – thus allowing multiple, simultaneous paths to be established and greatly reducing the likelihood of timing out. Send CHR a bunch-o-money and we too can have the big fast pipes!

It’s also possible that the actual server is down, but such shouldn’t be occurring too often as it is monitored and in most instances will automatically failover or worst case, reboot…

Yep Glenn, that was exactly the explanation I was going to give! Sounds like you understand these darned computers.

Glenn, your analysis is far more elegant, and likely way more accurate than mine. I was just thinkin', look out boys, she's 'bout ta go titsup!

Okay – so Rickomatic gets an “A” for mouse dexterity as well as “cut & paste” skills – seriously people, while this is a bit frustrating, it’s not like we’re paying “per transaction” or for wait time when using CHR. This is supposed to be fun as well as educational but like my ol’ dad used to say, “What do ya want for nothin’, your money back or something?”

These problems ultimately relate to size and quantity of high speed “pipes” that are available to CHR’s server(s) and the priority placed on “free forum” traffic on the Internet.

Believe it or not, some of you may be responsible as outdated versions of browsers (i.e., Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox, Minefield, etc.) may not keep pace with vBESO (vBulletin Search Engine Optimization). What’s vBESO you ask? It’s the engine that powers most “free forums” on the web. It’s a constant challenge to stay current.

When these errors are logged, they are automatically forwarded to an administrator (sometimes an automated administrator) to begin de-bugging and issue patches. There are literally hundreds of these fix requests forwarded to administrators around the globe every minute of every day. Sites that are flush with cash (read Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc.) have monstrous resources in terms of hardware, software and people dedicated to addressing these errors as fast as they come in.

CHR, and other free forums, fall much lower in the queue and fixes are often times a result of a global propagation of a proven fix from one of the big boys. As such, from time-to-time, we experience a problem that might just “disappear” or it may be one that requires a re-boot of server resources.

Remember that every time you hit “enter” or “send” that you are contributing to the billions of bits that are continuously circumnavigating the Internet. Information sent include a lot of “stuff” that you’re not even aware of such as your MAC address, IP address, and statistics about your hardware environment that is combined into lookup tables to continue to refine and streamline the process. The only way to totally prevent any interruptions would be a dedicated fiber between your PC and the resource you’re connecting to – probably not likely.

So relax – have a cup of coffee – all of us are old enough to remember when we mailed questions to knowledgeable folks and waited for answers or went to the library and looked things up in books. Ahhh books – I still love them and I still like to read the Summit catalog too!

    Regards All,
    Glenn

Glenn, I understand that this forum doesn't cost us one red cent, and we aren't attempting to bite the hand that feeds us. However...........it is a forum that, for whatever reason ,the owners have decided to fund, and we who use it are contributors to that forum.

I am on about 5 other forums, some are very small by comparison with limited funding by one individual who just does it for the benefit of his friends. None of those have the time out and log on problems that CHR has had forever. The reason I have 3 different user names here (and how I ended up with the stupid current one I have) is because I kept getting kicked off of the forum by something in the site. No matter what I did, I couldn't get back on, and was being told by the Mods that it was ME doing something wrong. Finally, some other people stepped up and said they were having the same problem, so I came back on and said " I TOLD YOU SO!", hence the current user name.

If the owners/moderators do not hear about these problems they have no way of knowing they exist. The one customer you do not want is the one who simply goes away and says nothing..........the ones who mention problems care enough to do so. Regardless of how we try to justify it, not being able to log on for minutes, hours, or days sometimes IS frustrating. It's gotten so bad I am actually surprised when I log on and it works!

    Unhappy

The moderator (singular these days) is attempting to keep his business afloat and his employees, employed at the moment. Things are not looking good due to the current economy..........For the record,I do not have access to the server(s).

I did send the following off to Brent just a few minutes ago.....

It really does need a post from the owner:

    Frustrating to say the least.
