My Youngest nephew, Daniel graduated from UC Davis last summer with his degree in Enology (winemaking). He starts working a harvest in Northern New Zealand for 3 months starting in March. He had three weeks to explore the territory so he invited his older brother that graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, also last June, but with his Masters in micro medical engineering to join him for the three week vacation. Two days later, the earthquake hits Christchurch and no communication from the boys whatsoever. Didn't know if they stayed up north, moved south...nothing. No cell phone communication, no Facebook, no e- mails, nothing. Very unusual for them. Daniel was supposed to rent a local cell phone the next day and call with the number but never did. My brother-in-law, a doctor, normally doesn't get worked up about anything. But after a couple days of no communication, he reported them missing to the State Department. I have no idea how they found them, but they did. Safe and sound, up north, traveling, seeing the sights, sunburned and not thinking to call. Everyone else was worried...they were fine. And so the saga ended, with relieved family and two embarrassed young men...... I hope everyone else's stories have a happy ending like ours.

Wow, that had to be a heart stopper. Glad it worked out well and hope everyone else has the same outcome.

No survivors have been found for two days now.
Outlook seems very bleak for the 200+ still missing.
The central city is totally trashed as is a number of outlying suburbs.
Around 500,000 live in the area.
Many are moving out for good now, after going through this 5 months ago.
Something like 7000 after shocks since the first biggie in early September.
My heart goes out to every one of them.
I am not normally an emotional person, but this has got to me.

We had a small win today.
Some miserable pricks pinched three $6000 emergency generators that the Teleco had brought in to help prop up the cell network.
They got caught & our usually generous judges, decided to decline bail & put their next hearing at 28 March.
Gotta love a judge like that

I'm very concerned because we haven't heard any updates from Whiplash since his initial post on the 22nd, regarding his ex wife missing in that mess. I imagine he is busy right now and hope they have a good outcome.

Roger, these people are pond scum...in fact when the judge denied bail, they got a bit nasty and gave the judge the finger..They are remanded until March 28..And yes,by all means..show the world what they look like..
But with this namby pamby system of privacy act, dont hold ya breath..

To Whiplash23T,My heart goes out you. This must be a very difficult time indeed, please know, us here in Canada are thinking about you folks over there.
One thing about this form that I noticed is that there is a very strong bonding and wanting to help among people far and near on here, that's more then just hot rods, you just don't find that everywhere.

We will continue to keep our fingers crossed that Melanie and all the others are found alive. When we hear about these sorts of things on the news it is one thing, but when it hits home and affects good friends, like those on here, it is something altogether different.
Very sad situaltion.

Well it all just seems so unfair.
We are out on the western side of the city, and around here you wouldnt really know theres massive damage about 5 miles away. But Im in a house with power, phone, water & sewerage - the usual first world stuff.
Yesterday we got a crew of about 10 and went over to the beach suburbs on the east that took the hit and its like the third world over there. We helped a guy make his house weatherproof because its going to be the only place he and his wife will have for some time as this cleanup will take years & he wants to be in his community. The sports clubs 20 miles out of town are waiting to help the displaced, but nobody seems to want to leave what little they have left.
My wife was over distributing free food in one of the other poorer beach suburbs and that area looks like a war zone.
The relief effort is huge, and well co-ordinated. There were helicopters flying in hot food to avoid the roads & we have something like 5000 porta-loos either here, or on the way for those in the city.
Then we got in our car, drove back across town to "normality". Its a strange strange situation.
